In the end, you won't be able to connect a FireWire HD using this method. I didn't read any reviews before purchasing this adapter, assuming that I could easily connect an old FireWire hard drive and organize some old files by doing so. When I plugged it in, I received messages telling me to unplug it, and all of my other hard drives were automatically disconnected. Thankfully, there were no negative consequences. Only later did I learn that a FireWire device consumes too much power to be connected to a USB port. So, of course, this adapter isn't going to work! Hopefully, you've read this before squandering your cash. I threw it away so that it wouldn't end up in the hands of some other unfortunate individual! I did some research and placed an order for a new cord as well as a thunderbolt adapter. I'm crossing my fingers that the $40 investment pays off.
I was hoping to use this to connect a firewire output from an old video recorder to a USB port, but it didn't work on either a Mac or a Linux machine; both saw a new USB device, but none with video capabilities.
a waste of time. . . . A FireWire HD cannot be connected using this method. I hoped that plugging in my old FireWire drive would be simple, but I received messages telling me that I needed to unplug it right away. This adapter will not work because FireWire devices require too much power to run through a USB port; read this before wasting your money. . . Garbage. . . Junk.
So I bought this the other day and it's not working. I tried using the adapter with my Motu Ultralite, but it didn't work. On my desktop, I used the same firewire cable, which worked flawlessly. I tried using it with the adapter on my laptop, but it didn't work out.
It didn't work out. It also felt as if it was about to fall apart.
It's just a usb soldered to a firewire input that doesn't work when you plug it in.
