This isn't just a bad situation; it's a disaster
3/5

It's a disaster, and their customer service is even worse. After approximately six weeks, this drive failed. It finally came to a halt. The drive's light would illuminate, but nothing else happened. The drive did not appear in the Finder, Disk Utilities, DiskWarrior, TechTools, or even Terminal on my Mac, and it continues to do so. Since I bought it, it's been sitting on my desk. Nothing, not a drop, not a drop of water. Other USB devices function normally. br>br>I contacted the manufacturer, Seagate (which now owns LaCie). They could replace the drive because it was still under warranty. "Data recovery is not covered by the warranty," they also stated. " They directed me to a page on the Seagate website (where Seagate also offers a two-year DataRescue plan). " That link was followed by me. The following is an excerpt from the website: "US $49. 00" br>br>"US $49. 00" br>br>"US $49. 00" br> 00 for the engagement fee US $650. 00 Recovery Fee with Return Mediabr>ENGAGEMENT FEE DUE RIGHT NOW (NON REFUNDABLE)br>FINAL PRICE MAY INCLUDE LOCAL TAXESbr>RECOVERY FEE AND OTHER ADDED OPTIONS WILL BEbr>DEDUCTED AUTOMATICALLY UPON SUCCESSFUL RECOVERYbr>FINAL PRICE MAY INCLUDE LOCAL TAXES"br>br Yes, I might get some of it back, but the trip was only six weeks long. br>br>Unfazed, I retrieved the box from the closet and discovered the Data Rescue plan brochure. There's a link as well. There is a lot of information on that website about the plan and how to buy it. There's no mention of actually putting the plan into action. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> They didn't charge me the $699 or the $49. After discussions with Amazon, the vendor, and Seagate, they decided not to charge me the $699 or the $49. They said they'd recover the disk using the Data Rescue plan that came with it. As a result, I entrusted them with the recovery of my disk. They returned a BLANK DISK to me. br>br>When I inquired about my original disk, Seagate informed me that it was still being recovered. Um. That is something I wish they would have told me. Receiving a blank disk with no accompanying note explaining what had happened led me to believe that my files were lost forever. Seagate could have at the very least sent me an email with an update on the situation. That was not the case. I had to write them, politely expressing my dissatisfaction, in order to receive updated status information. That disk was a replacement for the one that had crashed. AND WAIT, IT GETS BETTER: br>br>AND WAIT, IT GETS BETTER: br>br>AND WAIT, IT GETS BETTER: The date is now October 4th. On the 28th of March, I purchased it. They returned a drive to me, which I received today. It's rumored to contain my recovered files. This drive is secured with a password. It wasn't like that in the first place. Without the password, I can't access the files; however, did they send it to me? Nope. I'll have to call people and send emails once more. br>br>It appears that they are attempting to blow it in every way possible. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> I emailed Amazon's CEO and Seagate's CEO about the ongoing saga on Saturday, October 5. I wasn't expecting to hear from either of them until Monday at the earliest. Even though it was a Saturday, Amazon called me within 20 minutes! Amazon was willing to go to great lengths to help, but the issue is clearly with Seagate. Is it true that I haven't heard from Seagate? No way! In a couple of days, I'll mail them a certified letter. br>br>Oct. 8, 2 p. m. : br>br> Seagate sent me a text and an email with the password after I contacted them again via email, and I also received a phone call. Yes, the nightmare is over, but I will never again purchase a Seagate/LaCie product.

Warranty is a waste of money
3/5

At the age of just over 30 days, the drive failed. A "Factory Repaired Drive" was installed in its place by Seagate. We work in video production and would never risk saving a few dollars by using a repaired drive. Even if the disk drive was replaced on the inside, the I/O board would need to be replaced. The connectors on it have been plugged in. How many times have you been unplugged? They might not succeed the next day. I got in touch with them and asked for a new replacement. They couldn't have been more helpful. They assured me that it would perform as well as a new one. If it breaks down, they'll fix it or replace it. br>br>However, to be fair, we've had over a hundred of these drives. To transfer data, they were mailed all over the world. Only three have ever failed for me. A premium drive, on the other hand, should be accompanied by premium service.

This drive should be avoided
3/5

I have several LaCie Rugged drives with various connection ports that I use for travel. All of the previous ones I've owned have performed admirably, so I was taken aback when I received this one and discovered it to be a complete failure. Because the new MacBook Pro only has USB-C ports, I decided to buy it. This seemed like a good deal because of the C ports. I'm not sure why, but when I mount it on my MacBook Pro or my large Mac Pro, it only shows 411MB. I tried the LaCie setup as well as formatting with Mac Disk Utility, but it still only showed about 400MB. I tried copying over 2TB of data onto the drive and received an error message stating that there was insufficient space on the disk, indicating that the drive is defective. I tried using it in both El Cap and High Sierra to no avail. I tried two of these drives, and both of them had the same issue. All of my older drives mount without a hitch, so I'm not sure why this isn't working.

Six months later, the drive failed, resulting in the loss of $12,000 in client work
3/5

I bought this brand new 6 months ago and it just stopped working while I was editing a client's project. I've lost six months' worth of work on a six-month-old hard drive, and I've got thousands of dollars' worth of projects to refund because a hard drive that I paid a lot more for because of its durability and longevity is now as useless as any other orange paperweight. I thought I'd found a company that made a good, dependable product, but I was sorely mistaken. For the past 48 hours, I have received no response from customer service. I'll have to pay a company around $1,500 to try to recover the data surgically. And yes, I stated that I would pay $1,500 to ATTEMPT to save my data. For this "Rugged" piece of garbage, I demand a complete refund. Wish me luck when I tell a dozen or so brides that they won't be able to relive their wedding day.

Update! This is aimed at Mac users only
5/5

Download the latest software and/or firmware from the LaCie website if you have the most recent Mac operating system. Unmount and remount the disk, then format it with the Mac Journaled / GUID type (do this before using it because it erases everything). It was no problem at all! br>Due to my software, this is an old review. br>It was mounted with 424 MB of free space. What? However, I have three others in my office who are true heroes!.
