Is the waistband elastic or just a drawstring, and how does that work?
An elastic band and a drawstring are featured on the pants. The drawstring came out in the wash, but that's not a problem because the elastic holds up well on its own.
Do the bottoms of the legs have any elasticity? Is it possible to tell just by looking at the photos?

I am 5'5" tall and weigh approximately 120 pounds. Despite the fact that it is a men's small, they are enormous. My husband, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds, received them as a gift. Lol! As a result, you have been warned. They are, however, very cute!.
