The jacket is fantastic! Slim fit is very fashionable now, so this is a great cut. The size up would probably be recommended if you expect him to wear it for more than one season.
Although you can, it's velvet-like material, so your edge would be frayed. You can sew it for a finished look, but then it would look like fringe.

I gave this blazer to my son, 8, who loved it! The shirt was worn so many times by him. A pleasant quality of velvet, a beautiful interior lining and a kerchief added to the pocket are all excellent features! His use of it lasted two years before he grew out of it.

Having a fourth grader who loves to dress up for Christmas is a good thing for me. Since wearing this everywhere, he wears it all the time. A lot of people have complimented him on this. Despite the label stating that it should be dry cleaned only, I washed it on the delicate cycle on the line and let it dry naturally.
