I agree! Quite a bit of work has been done! They are very comfortable for my son and he uses them on a daily basis for school. It is great to have these shoes!
Sadly, the Big Kid Size 1 is a lace up with a hook/loop to add additional umph.
No idea, but I had high arches as a kid and my child is pretty skinny. I don't mean that he wears them, but these shoes look great. When a kid is that age, you can't ask for a sneaker that will last. So, they will grow out of them before the soles or any other part of these shoes wear out, as they do with so many of the other kids name brand sneakers.

It seems Merrell quality control is spotty, or my son has a really easy time breaking in shoes compared to his peers. Our son attends a school that makes it a priority to play outside every day (in New England), so his shoes definitely see a lot of rain, mud, and running around on grass, gravel, brick pavers, and our house's concrete and asphalt. My kids' velcro fastening strap on other brands of shoes has often worn out on other pairs associated with them from other brands as well. The Trail Chaser shoes get a lot of use and don't need to be particularly delicate or careful. Our hiking shoes have held up as I would expect from sturdy footwear. The first Merrell Trail Chaser shoes I purchased for my son were purchased in person at a Nordstrom store after his feet were I found them on Amazon and purchased his second pair of shoes in January 2019, after he outgrew his first pair (yet refused to wear any others). I bought the third pair of his shoes that he has today in January 2020. There has been a little change from the Amazon listing from The Merrell Trail Chaser Hiking Shoe (Little Kid/Big Kid), Gunsmoke/Orange, number 2, is designed for children. The 5 million US little kids are going to Men's and Women's Merrell Kids' Unisex M-L Sneakers, Trail Chaser, Gunsmoke/Orange, size 4, 4 each. There is hardly a difference between the old and the new style aside from what is probably just a change in product listing. We have the same color scheme of green (Gunsmoke) and orange for all three pairs and neither my son nor I can find any noticeable difference. Based on the photos of less satisfied consumers, it does appear that a greater majority of them are showing alternative color combinations. Is it possible to recommend Gunsmoke/Orange as a better option for anyone reading this who is concerned about quality?
I cannot describe the impact that these shoes have had on my child's life. It is really hard for me to get him to wear any other comfortable footwear.
