Arms are a little short for me, so I'd go with a 7.
Size 5 is the recommended size. My son usually wears a size 10, which would have fit him, but we went with a size 12 so he could wear it for longer. These vests are very nice. I'm glad I tracked them down.
My son is also an 8/10 in clothing; he is slim and the 10 fits him perfectly.

The finished product was not up to par. made in any way It was slightly baggy on one armhole, and the back was difficult to adjust; additionally, I have a strong suspicion that it was used. There were no tags on it, and it was crumpled in a clear plastic bag. I didn't have the option of returning it because I needed it for photographs that day. Even if they hadn't sent me a used one, this does run large, so keep that in mind.
