There are two metal plates attached to the mount. It was one big and the other small. There is a smaller plate with a strip of 3M tape on it that you stick on your case or device. As opposed to taping the plate, I usually just slide it between the case and the phone. That way, I don't have to worry about having to remove the plate later.
Buying one of these a year ago was a good investment for me since I live in Central Texas. Until I found it barely hanging off my dash by the front edge, the adhesive lasted about 6 months. After I cleaned and allowed the area to dry well, I reattached the shelf, but about 2 days after that, it fell again, as if to prove its strength, just unattached altogether, falling down to my floorboard and breaking. Earlier this year, I bought a 3M 'heat resistant' adhesive foam tape that I tried to attach to my book case using a scraped-off piece of 'original' adhesive, but it didn't hold. Both the car and the dash on my car are black, so it gets REALLY hot, especially here where rain either is rare or simply just floods us on some random weekend with three months of rainfall. My brother had given me one of these, and I picked it up from a store that had them, as a quick fix to not having a mounted one so I could use it. In the last 24 hours, its already coming up on the back side and trying to fall forward. This is on a brand new pad, once again having cleaned the dash where I wanted it to be mounted, allowing it to dry, then lightly pressing it into place for about 30 seconds. There are so many things that I love about this mount the profile, the strength of the magnet, the mount's mounting. The heat is extremely oppressive in triple digits, but I'm not sure how those in the west manage to keep their crops from falling after a few months. It is the only adhesive that I have been able to find, that is both tough and won't damage my dash when removed when I remove it.
If you are using a magnet plate, it may or may not work, depending on where the plate is situated (on the back of your phone or between layers of your case). Vibrations occur when the phone is off the mount, either because you used a wrong plate or you have the plate far away from it. Also, it is dependent on the size of your phone and the thickness of your case if you are using one.

As far as a part subjected to high torsional forces, this is not an appropriate material to be used. This is just a piss poor design that does not require you to be an engineer to recognize. Rather than purchasing something from this brand, the recommendation would be to consider something that can last longer.
