Questions & Answers

Is there a method you can follow for applying the compound to a Does it work for knives and not for straight razors?

As for sharpening, it is sharpening, no matter what kind of tool it is. I use leather strops to finish woodworking tools like chisels and plane blades, as well as knives of all kinds. Strops made of leather that are used with woodworking tools are actually two pieces of leather that are glued together. In this case, one side is the grain (smooth) side and the other side is the suede (rough) side. Usually, I either put white aluminum oxide, green chromium oxide, or red jewelers rouge on the suede side. The same is true of diamond paste. People like it for its resemblance to diamonds. You can find a variety of grit levels in different types of finishing compounds. The grit is generally finer in all of them. The thing to remember is that what you are really doing when you sharpen steel is removing metal from the sword, regardless of whether you use oil stones, water stones, diamond stones, or whatever method you use. My final step to achieve a razor edge (anything less makes woodworking tools less effective) is to move to increasingly fine grit stones until I have an 6000 or 7200 grit stone. The Japanese water stone has a grit of 8000. The wire burr left behind in your blade is so fine that you can see it only under a microscope. With each grit you use, the burr decreases in size, and each successive finer grit leaves less burr behind. No matter how hard one tries, the burr always remains. Using the polishing compound on the first strop and the smooth grain leather on the final strop is what is required to remove the Microscopically, you will also notice when you are honing a blade that each time you hone on one side, you bent the burr to the opposite side, which is why both sides of the blade should be honed The stropping procedure removes the very fine wire burrs from your blade, polishing the blade to a razor sharp finish. I believe an unbacked strop is used for straight razors due to the fact that straight razors do not have flat symmetrical blades like knives or woodworking blades do, as well as their It's sharp corners would ruin a straight razor strop if it was used with a chisel. According to someone on the internet, improperly stropping a blade will not ruin If you do so, you will only ruin your hone and have to hone it all over Allowing too much slack in the strop is one of the ways you ruin the hone. Just take out the burr if you want to. It is possible to round off the edge of a strop if it is not held tightly. Even so, honing again quickly forms a new burr so it doesn't cause any major problems, just a little extra effort. *br>*br>The better the steel, the longer the edge will last, but the longer it will take to put it back on, or the harder it is to remove the metal from it back to get it back into shape. There is only one way to ruin a blade, and that is to get it too hot and ruin Generally speaking, power sharpeners like grinders, belt sanders, etc. will result in this when they get too hot. If you use one of these and see the blade turning rainbow colors, it has become When you use a power sharpener that doesn't have a water cooling system, go very slowly and keep cooling the blade as much as you can. It's not going to happen to you if you use a straight razor. An electric grinder shouldn't be used on an electric power tool, in my view. Generally, it doesn't require too much effort to rehabilitate a blade If you hit a hard object on the blade's edge, you will need to hone and strop it. It would take a lot of time to achieve the desired outcome if this happens, starting with coarse stones to get the nick out, then working into very fine stones to return the edge. discovered that you only need a few swipes on a sharp blade before moving on to the next finer grit in order to hone it. We should let the stones do the heavy lifting. In terms of stropping, the same holds true. When I get the perfect blade that I want, I rarely have to use more than a few swipes of the chrome oxy or rouge and a few on the smooth grain. The more you say, the less helpful it is. In most cases, when I strop too much, the blade becomes less sharp rather than sharper. Thanks for taking the time to read this. The sharpening of steel is a process that requires science,

Is there a specific manner in which these strops should be used? Would it be better to use the fabric or the rough suede side of the leather to sharpen my knives? Is that smooth then?

You'll likely get multiple answers to your question, and every person who sells knives or razors will have a perspective they prefer. To strop my knives without damaging them, first I use fabric, then the smooth side of the leather. I have never used the strop of my knives but I do it to strop Thanks for taking the time to read this.

If I need a replacement section of leather for this strop, how should I proceed? Mine has a lot of cuts and nicks because I accidentally did something. ?

Go online to the actual amazon seller's site and order the replacement. You can see the vendor's information off of the Amazon site. Google red Latino strop if none of the above work. The first one I cut I ordered so long ago (I think the first one I cut was from one of the five sites the product was offered at) that I don't remember which of the five sites I used to order it

When applying the green chrome oxide compound to a straight razor, which side should I apply it to? Do you want the fabric or leather strop to be on the back?

Use the green chrome oxide on the surface of the canvas (it should be Wipe the blade clean after you have stropped it on the canvas so that the leather doesn't get contaminated.

Although I had read other reviews saying the leather was poor quality, I figured it would be worth it since it received good ratings
3/5

It has been around three months since I purchased this product. Despite the fact that this stop is made of incredible hardware, it was packaged in a tiny box, which caused the leather to wrinkle and when I used it, it would leave behind tiny pieces of leather. I was a newbie to wet shaving, so I didn't think it would make a big difference and thought it would be the same. I contacted RoyalShave only to ask them to replace the stop in my blade. Knowing how stupid I was, I just asked if they would replace the chip. It's been a few days since I sent the email and I haven't heard back from them. This lack of response leads me to believe that RoalShave is comfortable with the quality of their product and that they realize the product could be defeated at some point. It had been noted in previous reviews that the leather quality was poor, but considering the high ratings I figured it was just some quality control errors. In light of the lack of response from RoyalShave, I will not be purchasing this product or anything else from them again.

The product is beautiful, and the shipping is cheap
3/5

In just a few days, I will start shaving with an ordinary straight razor, which is the first time I'm buying a strop. This strop came in an attractive small box. I bought it due to its high reviews and the fact it seemed like it would last me a while. As it came rolled up, that was a red flag, but I was excited to take a closer look and it looked like an incredible After more investigation, however, I saw a couple of stretches, one near the base where made in usa is, and the other in the center It's almost as if the skin is cracked and dried. As I am in no way an expert on razor strops, I cannot imagine that these ripples would be good for the razor edge. There must be some kind of quality control in shipping, since this is probably from being rolled up in packaging. I wouldn't blame the company for it, but I hope they do some kind of quality control on it to guard against this. Although I paid a good price, it wouldn't be a big deal to pay a few extra dollars to receive the product as it was Dispatching this flat in a long, narrow box would be better than packaging it rolled up in a cube box, according to me. In addition, I am only starting to use straight razors, so I have no experience with any other strops to compare to these wrinkles, so I will happily change my review to five stars if the wrinkles are okay.

The leather is of high quality
5/5

After many years of using a straight razor, I decided to start using one again. My search resulted in a Damascus blade made to my specifications. When I sharpen the blade with a diamond sharpener, I strip it about 50 strokes and it's ready to shave. I touch up the blade with about 12 strokes each time. Could not ask for better settings.

I enjoy it very much
5/5

really like the strop, it works well for what I need. There is also a cotton side that I use, as well as the leather side. One side of the cotton side has green compound applied, and the other side is left untouched. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I work for three groups. Having this strop is a must since it is very functional.

I give it a 10 out of 10

The product is very well made and it works. Until I got this strop and the compound, I wasn't able to sharpen my straight razor. I give it a 10.

A good buy is better than no buy
5/5

A good buy is better than no buy. It's best to buy something cheaper than this first if you are a noob since you will cry if you cut into it accidentally. This is the widest I have ever seen. There is no need to sweep across the width, which simplifies things. There is no comparison with the quality of the products.
