It takes time for your skin to tan, so the difference between the dark and the light/medium has a lot to do with your own skin. You may choose to wash it off after 1 hour, but if you want a deeper, longer lasting tan leave on for up to 8 hours. I've used St. Tropez tanning (gradual & instant in spray. In lotion form) and a few other tanning products, but wanted to try this one after seeing another favorite YouTuber I found the consistency to be the main problem with this. Since it was much harder to spread and did not dry down completely, it was much harder to spread. Color guard on all of my things is very dark I was lucky to have a towel nearby when I sat down. The lighter color guards of my favorite St. Tropez do not rub off on things and the dry down completely. I have super pale skin, so it was nice to get an even tan there. When you have such contrasting colors (super pale vs dark tan), it can be difficult to blend. Aside from some uneven patches, I wasn't able to see any. It is probably not something I will use again unless I have a whole day at home during which I won't be concerned about my skin being sticky or if I can sit on towels in front of the TV.
