The quality of the wood determines how well the wood works. The baseboards on mine are hard wood and it comes off without a problem.
My opinion is that it would not be wise to do The installation of mine is on a metal coffee table and a brick fireplace. A double sided piece of tape is used to stick it on, so it should not cause any damage to the walls.

To cover the edge of our fireplace, I used this material. The overall effect is that the edges are smoothed out so the kids can play safely.
