Despite having trouble with the tool, I had no issues with the boots or clamps in the Kit. Occasionally, the Push Button on the Tool would not work properly, as it usually worked well some times but not all the time. Axle Boot Tool is used for expanding the Dorman CV boots. After the Tool had expanded the Boots, I had trouble getting them off the Tool, so I ended up using a simple Plastic Cone to expand and install the Boots, rather than the Tool. I must say that Doman employs some kind of special fluid on the Tool Fingers in order for the Boots to slide off the Tools. There is no part number on the pictures of the Lube, so when you go to an Auto Part Store the staff cannot look it up. It is not in the Kit, is not sold by anyone and cannot be found in a Store. Dorman was never able to answer my question about the Lube in the email. In any case, I put the Tool on the Shelf to try another time. I also discovered that I might have not been using it properly. In my experience, I should have folded the Boots in half for a better fit on the Tool Fingers. A folded Boot would have given less surface for the Rubber Boot to wrap the Fingers in. My next attempt will be to try that.
The outer CV boot of my 2008 Range Rover needs to be replaced. I had to go through seven boots provided before I could put one on without ripping it. The boot was released into the CV joint as soon as it crossed, but the tool bottomed out on the CV too soon. The boot was too tight, so I had to remove it at 2, so at about 2, it would slide off. Stretch for 5" or more. I ripped one more boot trying to do The boot finally came off of the tool (attempt #10), but it was extremely hard to get the huge diameter end back over the CV joint to clamp it. All in all, this process took me about 2 days and more than a few dollars. It costs less than the cost of this kit to buy a replacement ORM CV Axle. I guess you just have to live your life and learn from it.
I received what appeared to be a previously used CV Boot Air Tool with 2 missing CV boots and 2 missing packets of CV joint grease (I didn't bother counting As of the time of writing, the threads of the air line plug that screws into the tool still had Teflon tape on them. It was too late for me to replace the kit as I needed it urgently to fix my car. As it happened, the tool appeared to function as it should, after which it tore one of the boots. It also acts strange when the air release button is pressed. I was able to save time, money, and frustration by using this air tool. In addition to the air release button, removing the tool from the air line made it easier to operate. The number of stars would be higher if the air release button was improved and if the set was a new and complete one.
There is no such thing as a good boot. After unpacking the tool, I noticed that it had been in use previously. As a result of someone screwing on a quick coupler in the past, the teflon tape on the threads was shredded. The three boots I tried fit me well. Despite its full extension, each tool ripped at the small end before fully unfolding. It worked, and I was able to get one boot on one axle after heating it. In the case of Mercedes W123, 124, 107 or 126 axles, the tool would not extend more than half way over the CV joint. Although I had planned to replace all four boots of two axles, I have only replaced the cracked boot since the old, cracked OE boots are still the better alternative to the junk boots. It appears that 14 boots have been delivered, but only 12 have. When I used this tool with my Flex Boots they worked as expected. It is much more cost effective to purchase just the tool and then purchase flex boots later.
There are a few different sized stretchable boots available at Auto parts stores in case you need a larger size. The boots included are the smallest Dorman offers (Dorman 614-57. The number 001).
I found the tool to be easy to use and did everything I wanted it to do. The shipping process was very fast. To me, the only recommendation is to buy the tool alone. They do not fit Audis, and they are not very substantial, so maybe they would be suitable for a quad. It's a great tool, but the boots are not so great.
We ride a lot of 4x4s and side by sides, so this tool makes boot replacement quick and easy.
In the dealership, I learned that my CV boots were ripped and was quoted There is nothing included in this kit except the banding tool, which needs to be ordered separately. Although the air tool does not seem as if it will last forever, I found it to be extremely useful for stretching the boots. Plus, how many times will you have to use it?.
