I bought this because my rear main seal is leaking and I plan to replace it in the future. I had a friend who works at a dealership offer me the tool to do it, but I ended up getting this instead. When I tried to put it in the back cover while the engine was running, it didn't fit. It turns out that it isn't perfectly machined. It was about on one side. 01 thicker on one side than the other (approximately 3 sheets of paper). I had planned to return it at this point, but it turned out that this only made me want it more. I was able to make it fit after turning it. The bottom bolts were then lightly turned, and I was able to turn it all the way around without using any force. I got to thinking because I was out of round. I could use it to see if my crankshaft flange was out of round, which was one of my main concerns about the leak's cause. I marked the thick area and adjusted the cover so that the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock areas were getting friction. I inserted a couple of bolts into my flex plate and rotated it 180 degrees by hand. I used the out of round hub to see if there was any friction between 9 and 3 o'clock, which there was. My crank flange was round, so I knew that. After that, I aligned the cover with the hub until it was perfectly centered. I double-checked this by rotating the hub 90 degrees in all directions until the play was consistent throughout. I then pressed the seal in with the install tool that a friend had loaned me. I was very pleased with how this turned out in the end, and I plan to use it again in the future.

My truck was sold before I could use the quality tool, and it was packaged poorly. The tool is made of soft alloy, and it should not be rolling around in the box with other pieces, causing damage to the tool before you can use it.
buy it! This is a must-have tool for anyone building an LS/Vortec! It works perfectly and is significantly less expensive than the tool recommended by the General Manager.
Ensure that everything is in good order. No leaks. It's worthwhile to have.
It's a little sloppy, with a couple of wraps of elec tape, just like the fancy o-rings. ring type.
pefercts worked.
The flat plate only fits on the front of the oil pan to align the front cover, but the rear seal installer works great to align it.
