Is it possible to remove the idler arm from the steering (or center) link with this tool?

I am not sure, but I suspect that the center point is not properly engaged with the ball stud

What about a 97 Tahoe? Will it work with this puller? Is there a way to take the steering wheel off without removing the bolts?

While this tool was more expensive than the OEM brand pitman arm puller I already had in my toolbox (these are about ten bucks at your local chain autoparts store), there was no way to use it with my truck's frame blocking the pitman arm access. An alternative to this tool would be to have a shop charge $100/hr to do the job, or to purchase Snap-In HD. With over $200 on a tool, you're still getting a great The tool you get in this package will not look like it does in the photo, but it will be chrome. It is also listed as compatible with All GMT800 trucks are pretty much the same, so I think it's just the packaging they used in that year.

As a favor to yourself, here's what you should do If you want to do it The pitman arm must be cut with a die grinder to create a relief cut. It took about 10 minutes to make the relief cut, which did not need to cut into Ah, yes, I forgot to mention that the day before, soak the spline and nut in mouse milk (or your favorite penetrant). The OTC is applied and you are done within a few turns. An innocuous click is all it takes - no loud pops or bangs. A steering box or any other major parts did not have to be removed. You can measure the distance between the tip of the arm and the base of the steering box if you don't have a torque wrench. The fit will get you very close to the original torque if you are able to get the distance right. To use with my tractor implements, I'll keep the tool.

As a result, the pitman arm can be removed without having to remove the steering box, saving time. The only problem, which does not pertain to the tool itself, is that there are no 24mm/15/16" box end wrenches long enough to give the required.

It worked great on a 2002 Silverado C2500 and easily pulled the pitman arm from the steering unit's shaft (after I removed one fairly large box end/open end wrench on the opposite end of the 1 5/16" open end/box end wrench Using the pitman arm puller, I unbolted the steering box from the frame (the box is only held in place by three bolts)

This was a huge time and money saver for me! I used it in my 2002 F150 4x4 Pitman Arm and it worked as expected. We do not require a fee of $250 or more This particular mechanic did the work in less than 45 minutes. All that was required was to place the tool on the PS box, lube it up, and the car was ready to.

This is exactly what I was looking for for my 2001 Silverado! The pitman arm will no longer be dreaded and cursed by engineers who placed a crossmember under the steering box so it is impossible to remove. 2 Update (Update) The 2020 is used on my 2006 Silverado HD 2500HD. We had to loosen the steering box to get the puller to fit, but it worked fine once we did. By tapping on the arm of the pitman as you tighten the puller, you can loosen it. The fabric is thick, is not sheer, and does not stretch! In spite of the labeling on the package clearly stating that this will work to remove pitman arms on a 1998 Tahoe 4WD, it does not work

I'm not even close to that. In order to use the standard tool, you must first remove the steering gear. In addition, the pitman arm replacement cannot be installed with the steering gear bolted in place on this particular vehicle. Putting the project on the bench is at least the first step.

I am satisfied with how the pitman arm worked for my 2002 F150. The steering column shaft was not pounded by the 15/16 good size box wrench I used, but I had to reef hard on it to get it off. The construction is excellent. The following update The same process can be used to remove many Ford tie rod ends if you have the space, without damaging While tightening the nut is a challenge, the design makes it easier to work in tight areas. When I put the 12 point box on the hardware to be removed, I slide it over the adjustment nut. I found it to be extremely helpful.
