I had to figure out the advance feature before I was able to get this working. Use a little white paint to mark your timing marks and dial in the factory recommended advance for your motor. In my engine, it was 8 degrees below the top dead center. The gun was set to 8 degrees and I directed the bright light (even in daylight) in the direction of the harmonic balancer until the 2 marks aligned. There is an automatic temperature setting of 8 degrees. I found out my timing was off by about 5 degrees. The program is now working as it should. Additionally, I added an MSD stick to the degreed timing tape to make reading the time (I bought it from Amazon, as well).
In one minute, it will read one set of timing and the next it will be There were multiple timing lights on the same car and all of them read the same timing, and this particular light didn't figure in (it was I tried it one more time and it finally just gave out. The display does not display anything. It may not be everything it is cracked up to be. I bought this because of the good reviews. The manufacturer didn't get back to me when I contacted them about it. Upon calling, I received a message that I would have to pay for them to replace their faulty timing light rather than simply replacing the faulty.
Everything seems to be fine. There is some loose wiring in the housing that causes it to cut out on shake on an engine that is certified to be stable. The reading on the engine appears to be a bit jumpy. To fix that issue, I'm probably going to have to open the case up and do some soldering. I like that the 2/4 strokes can be set. The engine I am using has a wasted spark ignition system, which results in the 4 stroke setting reading double what the actual RPM is, while the 2 stroke reading is correct. It's normal for my engine to do that.
All of the other high dollar ones I've used work just as well as this one. Super simple to operate, readout is huge, all features work seamlessly, and they're not as expensive as the other ones. I guess. I like how bright the strobe is. The solution I've come up with works.
One thing to be aware of is that the original setting is 10 degrees ahead, so you have to remove the advance each time. No idea why they did it that way. It seems like a sure-fire way to have someone set the timing wrong somewhere along the line. Nevertheless, if you remember to do it before each use, it is a great gun that is easy to use, durable, and reliable.
Very nice job! It took me five minutes to set the timing of the ignition. It's great to have a tachometer on the car!.
It is a very good product.
Perfect for use in the yard or garden during the daytime. As it turns out, I had been misjudging my timing. With the power I now have and the improved fuel efficiency, I now have a much better 1990 Nissan Pathfinder. My estimations were so far off. I set them by ear and thought I had gotten close.
