Questions & Answers
Welding it isn't a smart idea. You will ruin the steel's tempering regardless of the steel's composition.
It's a colossal bolt and nut combination. I used a big adjustable wrench and a pipe wrench on the ball to get it as tight as I could without it spinning. It was an excellent solution.
My gooseneck plate will not fit on it. You must first measure the hole and then place the appropriate shank under the ball. My weight-distribution hitch was made out of mine. The shank on my gooseneck is longer.

This is fantastic. I've had three of these over the years for various hitches and they're the strongest hitch ball I've found. The only disadvantage is that there is no flat spot, so when tightening it can spin. To get it tight, I had to think outside the box once.
Because it's bare steel, it'll rust quickly, so I spray painted it black and greased it. When I'm not hitched, I put on a rubber ball cap. My only gripe is that there are no flat spots on the sides to hold it in place while tightening to 450 ft-lbs. lbs. To keep it in place, you'll need to use a pipe wrench, which works fine but leaves marks. The flat spots appear to be absent from all newer balls. I'm guessing the extra cost of having them machined was a few cents.
Although the product is excellent, the shipping experience was abysmal. So much for Amazon Prime: the product was shipped eleven days after the order was placed and arrived one day later.
This is a fantastic trailer hitch ball. We bought a hitch, and it worked perfectly. Everything seemed to work well together. The item is exactly what it says it is. We've already hauled a heavy load across two states four times in 16 hours each time. This trailer ball comes highly recommended.
It doesn't have the same finish as the photo, and the shank and threads are rusted. If I ever need to remove it, I'll probably have to use a torch to cut the nut off. The ball in the picture would not have rusted if it had been exposed to the elements. If you don't mind the fact that this ball is made of bare, white steel, give it a 5 star rating.
This is an excellent ball. I'd seen other users complain about rust, but I'd never experienced it myself. As soon as I installed the ball, I greased it.
When I first opened the package, the ball's weight rating was less than 30,000 pounds, more like 10,000 or 12,000 pounds. This is in no way acceptable. The item was returned in perfect condition.
