It simply wouldn't light up after installation and wiring. The ignitor "clicked" as it should have, but the light never came on. I loosened the gas line until it was clear that LP gas was flowing through, then reconnected it, but it still wouldn't light. The gas valve apparently refused to open, preventing gas from reaching the ignitor. As a result of reading the other reviews, I removed the circuit board, and the short immediately became apparent. br>br>I've done some basic wiring before and can easily follow a diagram. This WH was properly wired. I had also purchased the switch with the red reset light, which was wired properly, and it was obviously shipped with a bad circuit board. The red light did not turn on at any point. br>br>Because the water heater was already installed, I called Suburban to see if they could send me a new circuit board; I told them I could send them a photo that clearly showed the fault; their response was that I needed to take the water heater to a "Technician," who would diagnose the problem and order a new one. That would entail taking the camper to a "Technician" and leaving him or her there for days or weeks to confirm what my photo clearly indicated. It didn't make a difference that I told the "Customer Service Rep" that we were planning a long trip in September. They didn't give a damn about it. I told them I'd have to take their water heater away and return it to Amazon. "It's fine!" they said. Because I was replacing a WH that didn't require any wiring, installing this WH was a pain. The attitude of Suburban was not well received. I understand that product reviews should focus on the product rather than customer service, but when it becomes clear that a company is shipping defective products on purpose, buyers should be aware. br>br>As a result, I've returned the SW6D and replaced it with a SW6P. To put it simply, I don't trust that product, and I'd rather go outside on a cold, rainy day and manually light my WH than risk the electric start SW6D failing while boondocking in the backwoods. I understand that this company, like many others, is experiencing difficulties as a result of plant closures and parts shortages, but that is no excuse. Rather than forcing the buyer to do this for them, I believe that all SW6D heaters should be pulled from stock and thoroughly tested.
Company was contacted, but no response was received!.
The circuit board fried after a few uses over the last eight months, according to other reviews. Do you have to go through a dealer to get your warranty claim? If Suburban intends to sell at retail, they should have some contact information. I'm not going to buy anything else with suburban products in it.
I had to replace my "Suburban (sw6D) travel trailer water heater" after it burned out and had no water when I powered up on a trip due to my own negligence. (Don't be that guy/don't do that). br>br>After some research, I discovered the best price on Amazon and placed my order. It arrived in perfect condition about 4 days later, so I didn't have to worry about it getting damaged in transit. I should add that it was very well packaged, with heavy cardboard liners on the inside to ensure safe delivery. After watching a YouTube video, I decided to install it myself. It was easy as pie; all I had to do was pay attention to how it emerged from the side wall and how it was wired. connection to a gas supply 3 wires were connected in the same way as the old one, then the excess wire length was zip tied (helpful for installation, pulling it all out onto a stool). br>br>Carefully re-installed in its original location in the wall, paying close attention to how I planned to connect the gas compression nut once it was in place. I had to go inside and position it properly, then return outside and carefully pull it into the knockout before connecting it. That was the difficult part, but it didn't turn out too badly. It wouldn't bend or flex easily, but with a little force from one hand (fingers), the other was able to thread it in place over the Teflon taped threads on the fitting. br>Before the gas hookup, I screwed the housing into the studs on each side with two screws left over from the original installation. Before I do my test run, I'll check for a propane gas leak with a soapy water mix, but I'm confident everything is in working order for the next trip. br>br>From now on, I'll double-check to see if there are any waters in it by checking the release value outside. Overall, if you're handy with tools, it was a simple install. With caution, it took around 3 hours. I'd cut the time in half if I had to do another one.
It's the same unit I have in my travel trailer, and it's over $100 cheaper than the camping world club price. Easy to install; take your time and look after the outside frame and door, as well as the teflon pipe connector you'll use to connect the water. Apply 1/8" of the width of the frame's outside lip with plumbers putty to seal around the frame.
These are exorbitantly priced, but then again, so are all water heaters. It was more difficult to install because of how the original water heater was installed, but it takes a skilled and experienced person with some tools to properly install one of these.
The item was purchased on July 2, 2021, and it was installed on October 14, 2021. br>For those who want to do it themselves! To avoid any confusion when wiring the DC electric, make sure you connect the DSI according to the instructions and use color-coded wire that you'll need to purchase extra of. br>On a scale of one to ten, how difficult is it to install aftermarket parts on a 1997 Coachmen? Catalina Lite) I'd give it a five out of five. Some travel trailers may require a resizing of the water heater opening. br>There is no way to adjust the temperature, which results in scalding hot water that burns your skin. br>It's also difficult to set up.
Simple to swap out. Everything was in excellent working order. I think a slight indentation for the gas line would help it slide into the space a little easier. It's not a major issue. I'd buy it again without a doubt.
