Questions & Answers

Would a 1/4" npt plug, drilled and tapped, be thick enough in the bottom area?

I would not attempt to tap the Dorman cover because it is thinner gauge than the OEM cover. The rearend would most likely be lost if the plug was lost. br>Mike C. is a freelance writer who lives in New York City.

Is there a gasket included in this?

The cover is all there is to it. The gasket can be found at a local auto parts store or on Amazon for a reasonable price. They aren't made by Dorman, but they are reasonably priced.

Is there a filler hole in the Diff cover? One picture appears to have a hole, while the other appears to have none. ?

There is no room for a filler. You must fill the differential through the fill/level check hole on the driver's front side, as Ford intended.

Is it compatible with a 2004 Ford F-150's front differential? 250 6. ?

No, I doubt it. In 2003, Ford discontinued production of the DANA 50. On your 2004 SD, you almost certainly have a DANA 60. However, because it's on the front of my 2001 SD, I can attest to the product's quality.

The same as OEM
5/5

It has a good cover. Maybe a tad thinner than one, but not by much. Before replacing the cover, I removed the magnet from the inside and painted it. On my sterling/ford rear end, it worked perfectly. It would be nice if there was a drain near the bottom, but the original didn't have one. So far, everything has gone well.

I used the included gasket, which worked perfectly
5/5

On both sides of, I used silicone sealant. This past weekend, I finished installing it on my 2000 Ford F250 4X4 Crew Cab. The cover appears to be identical to the original in thickness. I used the included gasket, which worked perfectly. Both sides of the gasket were sealed with silicone. It was a perfect fit and didn't leak at all! This product has exceeded my expectations!.

Paint should be removed
5/5

It's made of thin metal, but for the price, I shouldn't be too upset. br>br>I took out the magnet as well as all of the paint on the inside. On the inside, neither is required because there is far too much that can go wrong.

Three out of five stars

Fit my 2003 F250 perfectly, but was much thinner gauge than the original Ford part. br>Mike C.

For the money, this is a good differential cover
5/5

This difference was causing me some concern. Because it's an aftermarket item, the cover would be flimsy. When it arrived, I was pleased to discover that it was the same thickness as the OEM cover, was of good quality, was powder coated, and was simple to install. It's great to find a good aftermarket part of this caliber!.

99 F250 As stated in the advertisement- It went off without a hitch, and it was a real pleasure to work with I had to replace a 15-year-old rusted and leaking cover. RTV Sealant is used by MFG, but this product includes a gasket. Use either the gasket that comes with the kit or RTV Sealant instead of both. The gasket worked perfectly in my case. br>br>This cover does not have a fill/drain. You'll need to remove the cover to drain. A plug on the side of the differential housing allows you to add gear oil.

Appropriate and cost effective
5/5

It's not quite as thick as the original, and it's far from the most durable diff cover available. However, for a basic street vehicle, it's more than adequate, and it receives five stars in terms of value.

Powder coating on the inside could be an issue- However, this is highly unlikely
4/5

Differential cover is very good. I don't care for the powder coating on the inside; if it flakes, it'll be a disaster. Diff also has a lot of turbulence and hydro pressure, which could dislodge the magnet that is glued to the powder coating. As a result, I took off the powder coating on the inside as well as the magnet. Because there aren't as many metal particles in a diff as there are in a shifting tranny, the magnet isn't as effective. It's only a minor hazard, and mine didn't come with a gasket.
