It is steel construction and the coating is rust resistant. Coated with a smooth coating, it can definitely be used outdoors. Although it is a car component, it has a wide range of applications.

I expected it to be heavier, so hopefully it will be. It satisfies my needs. It was a perfect match. And, while I'm not familiar with metals, I'd guess steel. Steel with rust - as stated by another customer in the questions/answers section completion of the proof According to Google, the item is zinc plated and has a yellow zinc surface treatment to prevent rust. I'm sorry, but I'm not certain. br>I bought four of these to keep my trailer together while I drive it to be repaired (which is only 3 miles away). After the repairs and welds are completed, I'll probably keep these on the trailer for extra support. br>br>I'll be updating this review in the near future! In addition, I purchased less expensive U bolts and will compare the two types/sizes. The other, at 3/8" diameter, appears to be regular steel. I don't think they'll hold up as well as these did.
