My motorhome appears to have too short a wire and switch to reach both connections, as two connections require a cable of at least 17 inches. How often do wire splices need to be performed?

Not every situation involves wire splicing, but in the vast majority of cases, they are not required. They connect to the "frame" component of the switch, and I believe the switch wires are generally long enough to accommodate connection to the source of power as well as to the ground wire of the switch. In the door "frame," there is a powered electromagnetic switch that does not need a An electronic switch that is activated when the permanent magnet is closer than 2 cm. This device enables either of the two wires to be connected to the "hot" wire of the power source, in order to make the steps deploy when the door is opened. In the closed position, the steps retract in front of the door. There is an option to keep steps deployed regardless of whether a door is open or closed if "automatic" deployment/retraction is set.

What is the normal state of this switch?

The concept of "normal" does not exist to me As long as your door is open, it is open, while it is closed when it is shut. I had a simple install that worked right away, so I would have simply reversed the wiring had it worked backwards.

There was an issue with the switch, it worked, but there were parts missing

The magnet switch worked fine. (Normally it would be As well as the magnetic switch, a toggle switch and a cover plate were described. In addition, this has also been and continues to be the case as shown in the photograph. I am not sure what happened to the toggle switch and cover plate.
