In a nutshell Putting 5 cylinders in my car was supposed to fix the problem, but then the check engine light came back on after a few hundred miles. The part was removed and a few tests were performed on it (see video). Upon applying vacuum to the terminals and energizing the switch, the switch closes effectively, but gets stuck intermittently in the closed position (mostly) if disconnected. It's painful to spend so much time and money on a replacement part only to find out that it fails. This time around, we hope to have a better replacement part. The fact that it was inexpensive caused me to give it two stars instead of one. Because of this, I shouldn't have assumed it would be perfect. Edited to add The valve has been replaced. It turns out that to make the EGR unit work in my 1993 Celica, and other Toyota Automatics, the drive wheels need to be off the ground and the AT must be in gear. In other words, if you fail a smog test due to the EGR, perhaps you must put the car in drive and then back off of the gas pedal. Deceleration (deceleration).
