The overdrive switch is on the end of the transmission shift lever on my 1998 Dakota. It was flaky for a long time before it stopped working. br>br> This one was ordered after concluding that it was most likely the switch. While I was waiting for it to arrive, it occurred to me that it was only a switch, and that the problem was most likely a contact issue. So I worked the endcap off the switch (it pulls off) with a thin flat bladed screwdriver in the groove. To pull the switch out, you'll need pliers or something similar to grab onto the switch's two pins that plug into a socket. I connected my DMM to it, and sure enough, the switch was depressed, and it was reading open. br>br>I looked at it closely and saw that it was "take-out. " detachable" Two locking tabs can be seen, and the switch can be opened with a thin flat bladed screwdriver. Clean the oxide off all the contacts with a pencil eraser, then clean everything with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swap before reassembling. If you don't want to go through that, this switch is an OEM substitute. After being burned by aftermarket fit a few times, I'm no longer willing to trust them. DS1170, SW2203, and 1S2040 are a few of the aftermarket part numbers.
