purchase the Dorman 523- 009! When ordering parts for Ford Explorers from 2002, be cautious. In my case (a 2002 Explorer V6 4WD with 16" rims), the Dorman 523-A was required. 009, not 523, for both the right and left rears. Some websites (O'Reilly, for example) suggest that he is 007, as some websites (O'Reilly, for example) suggest. If the stud that goes into the wheel hub is smaller (15mm, 19/32", or 0. 59"), then you'll want to get the 523- The 523- I had to shorten one end of this part (the 523-007) because it had a larger diameter stud on the ball joint that wouldn't fit into my wheel hubs. 009) on the left side of the wheel so that the alignment shop could straighten it out. Simply unthread one of the ends and grind it down with an angle grinder to complete the task. After a lot of back-and-forth with the parts and two trips to the alignment shop, I was finally able to get it to work. That's what you get for such a low price, I suppose.
My old one had a broken bushing and a very loose nub, which caused some vibrations. I needed a new trailing arm after replacing the wheel's bearing and center hub. This arrived quickly, and because the alignment was still in place, I adjusted it exactly to the old one. I put some copper grease on it and had to tap it in a little. I tightened it up, and it's been running smoothly ever since.
On a 2002 Explorer 4-door, I had no trouble installing or fitting this part. Door. The ball joint on the outside of the ball is sealed. There must have been an update to remove the Zerk fitting shown in the photo, which was apparently causing problems according to previous reviews. The length can be adjusted, so I placed it next to the old part to fine-tune it. It is the correct right or left side part for Explorers built after 3/4/02.
After you've completed the project, you'll need to align it. This is the correct part for my truck, according to my research and study. It was fairly simple to set up on my own. When you're done, you'll need an alignment, but it fixed any issues I had with my truck's rear end.
I only had one problem with this product, which is that it is of excellent quality. In my 2002 Explorer, the grease zert on the ball joint does not clear the inside of the rim. Before it broke off and left a small gouge in the rim, I greased the ball joint. I simply covered the hole with JB weld and used it as a seal. I would recommend either looking for a sealed ball joint or sealing this one after it has been greased. I have the stock aluminum wheels on my Explorer XLT, so maybe this will clear a different wheel.
The grease fitting at the end of the rim path is too tall, and it rubs against the rim. I pumped the fitting full of grease to make sure the "knuckle" was full, then removed the fitting and replaced it with a threaded plug with a low profile; otherwise, it fit perfectly and was significantly less expensive than the stock option.
It was a perfect match. I've had it installed for three months and have had no problems with it.
Great product, but if you have a Ford Explorer with a smaller tire wheel than 17 inches, this product may scrape your wheels. That's not a problem for me because I have the 03 limited edition and it fits fine, so make sure you scroll down and see if it fits your vehicle before you order. Good luck.
