Selected User Reviews For ACDelco Professional 38172 Drive Belt Tensioner Assembly with Pulley
It was difficult to install the breaker bar in the 1/2" square hole you put the pulley bearings in. The bolts you used to hold the pulley were too small and a little loose. It's been almost 40 years since I've used this breaker bar and I used it to remove the old one without any problems. You might want to test your ratchet or bar on a new one before mounting it, and maybe take a Moto tool to it beforehand. My old tensioner had loose bearings in the pulleys, so if the belt slips while I am trying to put it on, I could easily break a finger. I put on the new tensioner and the bearings are much tighter. I'll keep it as a spare, and if the new replacement fails, I only need to replace the pulley. Belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys were replaced at the same time. However, after I installed a new AC-condenser I had to replace the belt also I must replace a Delco alternator at the same time, as it is defective. If I replace it, I will open up the hole a bit for my breaker bar, so future belt replacements will not be as difficult.
It's not really clear what happened to it. The tensioner pulley on my new alternator burst open when I put my correct size wrench in the slot to release the pressure, and with the belt taut, I couldn't put the belt over the alternator and now I have two stress cracks. When I took off the serpentine belt, I used the same amount of pressure I used when I put I am not pleased with this.
Despite the bearing being half the size of the stock part - that makes me wonder about the long term life - the part fit perfectly and was able to pull the right amount of tension during installation. Despite having a long life, I was sold shortly after the installation, so I cannot comment on its long-term durability.
This is a replacement for.
The quality seems to be OEM.
This is the perfect replacement for a 2004 GMC.
The belt fits perfectly on my 2005 Duramax you may need a breaker bar and to be an excellent contortionist to thread the belt and pressure the tensioner all at the same time, but this is possible with no assistance.
