This was purchased to be installed on my 2001 F350 in order to transport our bike rack when the camper is in the truck's bed. Because it will never be used to pull any loads, I didn't drill the other four holes. When I was finished, I inserted the bike rack into the receiver and noticed that it moved around a lot more than it should have. I tightened up the connection between the rack and the receiver by installing the threaded pin. I was still flopping around. A lot. All of my other vehicles with 2 inch receivers are rock solid with my Swagman bike rack. I took it out of the box and measured the receiver tube's actual size. It was 2 3/16 at the time. All of my other receivers are no more than 2 1/16 inch in diameter. It was a huge let down. What makes you think someone would do something like this? The majority of the world uses a 2 inch receiver tube. A 2 3/16 tube isn't used by anyone. Nobody. I suppose what you pay for is what you get. I suppose it'd be fine for a winch or lowering your boat into the water, but not for a bike rack, or any other rack for that matter.
That was fascinating to learn about. To begin, obtain a step drill bit to assist in the drilling of four new holes in your bumper mounting bracket. Give yourself some time to complete the installation. Fortunately for me, I had the support of my wife. When she couldn't get to the back of the bolts to put the included washers on, I had my 14-year-old son do it for her. I managed to put them on. After the achievement, he was delighted to assist. To remove the bumper bolts, I used my 20v cordless impact. to reintroduce them It's difficult to get to the back to start the included washers, but keep in mind that you can bend them to fit better or have a better "handle" on it, as others have mentioned. This appeared to be of some assistance. This hitch appears to be the same hitch for which you will have to pay an additional $20 or more. It's a sturdy piece that came with everything I needed (double-check your box before getting started). I mounted my hitch tray, which holds my RV generator, after I finished installing the hitch. It wiggled a little, but an accessory clamp can tighten up anything you've attached to it.
It was installed on the front cargo basket of our Ford Excursion to hold the camper generator. The front bumper, four front bracket bolts, and one side bracket bolt must all be removed prior to installation. Front tow hooks must also be removed, which is a difficult task with hand tools (I used impact), but these tow hooks can be re-installed. If you want, you can install it after the bumper is put on, but I didn't. It is REQUIRED to drill. on the bumper brackets that are attached to the bumper The vehicle frame mounts already have four holes that match up with your new front mount receiver, but the actual bumper brackets (from Ford) only have two factory holes pre-drilled, so drilling will be required on the brackets, and determining the center point to drill out will necessitate precise measuring.
0 Diesel. I believe it is the same design that is being sold for a much higher price elsewhere. The Amazon garage that says "Does not fit your vehicle" needs to be fixed. I spent a lot of time making brackets to reinstall the OEM fog lights, but it didn't turn out very well because the lights need to be further forward so they are exposed beyond the bumper, and adjusting them is too difficult. I'm going to order some aftermarket LEDs with a good limit line because the most difficult part of the installation was re-wiring. The lower flange on the hitch blocks access to the two forward bolt positions, so a combination wrench will be required to install the bolts that go through the hitch for the oem tow loops. It would be a breeze to install with an impact wrench and torque them if that flange was notched or reduced so they could be accessed from below with a socket extension. With a ratcheting box end, I could only get one click, and fully torqueing them was impossible. It was simple to reach the third bolt on each loop from below. The hitch arrived in excellent condition in its original packaging. My low-cost step drill worked perfectly.
My 2001 Ford F-150 was able to use this receiver. 350 Dually performs flawlessly. Drilling the bumper with standard drill bits was a pain. Even the pilot hole took a long time to drill, but when I switched to a "Step drill bit set," the step drill bit went right through the bumper. On the 2001 F-150, the drilled bolt holes on the passenger side were easy to get the nuts on behind the bumper, but the drilled bolt holes on the drivers side are a pain in the (well, you know what) to get to. 350 Overall, this receiver is an excellent value. It's extremely well-made, with excellent fit and appearance.
The hitch receiver is 2-inches long. My spare tire carrier, ball hitch, and bike rack all wobble a lot because the hitch is only 3/16" thick. Side to side, a hitch tightener bracket will not work, and with one installed, I can easily move the bike rack. Save your money and time by purchasing the genuine Reese 65022 front hitch, which this is supposed to replace.
This hitch is extremely durable, has an excellent design and fit, arrived quickly, and is reasonably priced. It's a little difficult to install, but not because of the hitch; rather, the tow hooks were difficult to remove, and the bumper and driving lights had to be removed as well. ( Note: aux. The truck's headlights must not be turned on).
I have two more F250 trucks to which I intend to attach this hitch, but I will not purchase this hitch again.
