This is a hole puncher AND stapler, for all of you previous commenters. I believe standard staples are used, Bridget.
Yes, legal size paper can be used; it is the largest size paper I have ever used. I'd imagine that the length of the paper doesn't matter as long as it fits into the hole punch space. I hope this has been of assistance.

It makes a noise, but it's not excessively loud in my opinion. It has a buzzing sound to it. I hope this has been of assistance.
If the blue button on top is pressed, the punch will be activated. If you lay the machine on its side, I'm not sure you'd be able to get to it; it's only about 4" wide (probably closer to 3"), so you'd only be saving an inch or two at most. Plus, as others have stated, it would be lying unevenly on its cord. I have held it in my hand and used it, so it may work, but only if the blue button is accessible. To me, the potential space savings would be insufficient to compensate for the inconvenience of using it in that situation.

A few years ago, I was in a serious car accident, and my "hole punching arm" (left) was severely broken. My arm's plates have been bothering me recently, and this seemingly simple task has brought tears to my eyes. I looked for an electric hole puncher but none of the ones I found were within my price range, until I came across this one. I can't express how pleased I am with my purchase! It's a one-button operation, and I can't tell you how much pain relief this provides for me on a daily basis! It always works perfectly!! I like that I have the option of using batteries or plugging it in. I can take it with me when I go to a student's desk to assist them in getting organized. It works fine plugged in at other times. I did jam it once (due to my own fault), but it unjammed itself after a few pushes of the button. What do you think of that? Because of the high quality and low price, I highly recommend this product.
Every time you punch a hole, it jams. When I look at it and press the punch button, one of the punchers does not return to its upward position, preventing me from pulling out my paper! As a result, I find myself wriggling, wrangling, and yanking the paper out with force, frequently tearing the hole! This is the second time I've bought a puncher like this. The first one worked fine for a while but eventually died, but I liked it and based on how long it lasted, I decided to get another of the same type. This was a poor choice. This hole puncher appears to be faulty!!.
I ordered this item because my wonderful old commercial style electronic hole punch, which I paid around $60 for and lasted me probably 15 years, finally gave up the ghost. The cost of an exact replacement is currently $120, which was simply too much. So I went with this smaller Swingline based on the reviews, but when I got it, I just didn't think the quality was worth the $46 I paid; it worked fine, but I didn't like the side entry of the papers, and it didn't feel sturdy overall. I admit that I was grieving my original loss, but after giving it some thought, I decided that it was not worth the money I paid, so I am returning it. Finally, I settled on a very functional ez manual hole punch that was much less expensive and would never break down.
For a short time, it worked well, but it died after less than six months. One punch is only capable of puncturing a few pages at a time. I inquired about the warranty with the manufacturer. The manufacturer's website and Amazon both stated a one-year warranty, but I never received a response. br>br>Avoid this product; I should have purchased the more expensive ones instead. Warranty? This brand isn't going to honor your request.
I bought it because of the Swingline brand's reputation for dependability. Unfortunately, it's just another piece of low-cost Chinese junk. junk made in the lab Every other use results in a stutter. The construction is flimsy. I strongly discourage you from doing so. I was going to return it, but opening the molded plastic container required surgical skills. Actually, the term "surgeon" isn't entirely accurate. It's more akin to a lumberjack with a chainsaw. In any case, the container was so badly mangled that it was (likely) impossible to return it.
I bought this product brand new and only used it twice before it started acting up. One of the metal pegs that makes the cut in the paper became stuck in the down position and will no longer raise when the other two do, so when it makes holes in paper only two pegs do so. If the third one rises, the paper will become caught in it, and you will have to tear it up to get it out of the machine; I am discarding it. What a colossal squandering of resources.
[] [] Despite its size, it is surprisingly light. new br> It's simple to get around: Approximately a quart in size. of milk. new br> There's no need to worry about catching your fingers: Papers have a small'mouth' opening; new br> Tray with holes – confetti in the future! After several rounds of empties, the container is well sealed. To be fair, a year's worth of hole-in-ones, or a school year's worth of hole-in-ones, or a school year's worth of hole-in-ones, or a school year's worth of hole-in-ones I'll be punching in my 6th grade classroom to get a more accurate test with "data" on the durability. Let's take a look at how effective this machine is on a daily basis. This is put to the test in the context of adolescent use.
At first, I was completely enamored with this device; I purchased it about 90 days ago and had only used it a half-dozen times or so when it broke, and guess what? It's already a mess! When I press the button, I only hear a clicking sound. And no, nothing is stuck in it; it isn't jammed or anything like that. Uugghh! As a result, don't be surprised if you're dissatisfied.
