Questions & Answers

Is it capable of fusing different types of glass?

COE (coefficients of expansion) vary depending on the type of glass. COE 90 and COE 96 are the two types that come to mind right now. COE 90 is more attractive in general, but it is more difficult to work with. If you get COE 90 glass, it will take some time to figure out how to use it in this kiln, which I've used to make hundreds of pendants. My tip is to run the microwave at 50% power for approximately 5-minutes. After 6 minutes, check the glass every 30 seconds or so until it begins to melt. Once it's fully fused, you only have a SMALL window of time to remove it from the microwave before the color fades and turns grey both inside the glass and on the surface. When you overheat something, it's very easy to ruin it. The higher the temperature, the more likely this is. Also, make sure you let it cool for at least a half hour before removing the glass from the kiln; otherwise, the temperature difference will cause it to crack or explode. It'll drive you crazy at first, but once you get into the zone and understand how glass works, you'll be able to create some stunning pieces.

Are there any instructions or other relevant information included in the package?

For best results, use a microwave with a power rating of at least 1000 watts. If you're using a microwave oven with less than 1000 watts of power, set the timer for 8 minutes. As needed, increase the firing time by 30 seconds at a time until you get the results you want. When the kiln reaches fusing temperatures, the hole in the top glows orange. It may take a few tries to find the best firing times, which are usually between 6 and 8 minutes. Remove the kiln from the microwave and place it on a non-reactive surface. To cool, place a flammable rack on top of it. Allow 30 minutes before opening the kiln.

A slice was included in the base, which will show up on fused pieces. I could try to repair it by filling it with bead release, but can I still return it if it doesn't work?

You could sand it smooth and use kiln paper to finish it.

How long and at what power should it be microwaved?

I used a 925 watt microwave and set it for 5 1/2 minutes on full power, then let it cool for 30 minutes. The time will vary depending on the size of the microwave.

So far, this kiln has met my expectations
5/5

So far, this kiln has met my expectations. It's worked out better than my other microwave kiln, and I've been able to fire some pretty cool pieces in it. Keep in mind that this package only includes the kiln; beginners will need kiln paper and safety gloves before operating the kiln, or they will end up with a messy mess on their hands. Also, gradually bring the kiln up to temperature by using the microwave wave settings (like 50% power for a minute or two, then 70% power for a minute etc) at least until you know% So far with my pieces I've been 90% successful and the 2010% off have been due to user error (me! ), as well as the kiln.

It's functional, but it's on the small side
4/5

It works great and does exactly what it says on the tin. I was astounded that such a device existed, and I purchased one to test it out. I'd never used one or even seen one before, but my first attempt went well, and I've since created about a dozen successful curio-related projects. trinkets of a high quality It takes a little longer than I anticipated, about 6 minutes in my 1200 watt oven with fuseworks 90 coe glass and a few hours to cool, but it's a small cake. It can only handle one small task at a time, so if I'm serious about it, I'll need a bigger one. They're delicate; I haven't yet broken mine, but I'm sure I will. It's a lot of fun and incredible. in the case of a novice Keep an eye on things - hot.

I'm sure I got a good one
5/5

I had previously purchased a Fuseworks microkiln and desired to purchase another to use while the Fuseworks one cooled. To be honest, I've been using them both "to death" and am quite pleased with them. br>br>This one is the same size as my "original" one and works almost as well. br>br>I believe pieces take a little longer in here, but it's not terrible. It's also a lot less expensive than a full-fledged business. Fuseworks has a high price tag. I was even able to cinter a small silver Art Clay piece in it!br>br>.

There are no instructions in the package
3/5

According to what I've read online, precious metal clay can be fired in a microwave kiln. There were no instructions included with this item. There was no information on how to use it based on the microwave's wattage, or that you might need kiln cleaner, kiln shelf liners, or heat proof gloves, or that you might need to remove it from the microwave as soon as it stops, or where you might find instructions. As a result, it's possible that this is a waste of money.

The functionality is excellent, but the base has broken
3/5

This kiln is one of my favorites, and I've used it a lot in the last month. Despite the fact that I received it for Christmas, it took me almost two months to overcome my apprehension about using it. Then it worked flawlessly, exactly as expected. This was the case until now. When I went to take the lid off, the base came loose from the inside of the lid. Now I have to decide whether to repair it or purchase a new base. I just placed an order for a larger one in the hopes that this will not happen again.

Works OK
4/5

This isn't indestructible, but it gets the job done. To get consistent temperatures, you'll need some seasoning. Mine had cracks in the metallic lining, as well as one spot where the lining had curled up a little - Perhaps as a result of exceeding the temperature range for which it was designed. In the microwave, it now becomes incandescent after about two minutes, though I usually zap it for about four minutes to get enough glass melting. Its heating properties do not appear to be affected by the cracks.

It works, but it heats in a haphazard manner
3/5

My microwave kiln is made by Fuseworks and it's fantastic! I got this for a fraction of the price of a Fuseworks model and it works fine. The quality control is not very good. I have to turn the lid halfway through because it heats unevenly. However, it does cause the glass to melt. It's fine as long as I don't do anything too complex.

The base was broken when I got it
3/5

My question is as follows: The base was damaged when I received it, and it will show up on my finished piece. I could try filling it with bead release and then covering it with kiln paper, but if that doesn't work, can I still come back? Please let me know as soon as possible. Depending on the results, I will gladly change my opinion. Kathy, thank you so much.
