Originally developed in 1999 for Windows, this is a native port of Heavy Gear 2 for Linux. If you plan on using a modern Linux distribution, be aware that it will be quite labor intensive.

This is the first game I've played since it came out and I have never gotten past the 10th or so mission because the weak storyline did not hold my attention. Despite the fact that the Gears are well animated and textured, they have still failed to act or sound right. Normally I would expect to hear the sound of metal parts whining and running when I am driving a 10 ton robot, but instead you only hear the soft footfalls Although the graphics are okay, it doesn't fully take advantage of the 3D card even when it has a 3D card. Although the weapons are balanced, the effects - aside from the rocket packs and particle cannons - are dull. I think that HG2 could have been a very good game had they had more time and not paved themselves into a least decent form. You can get Mechwarrior 3 if you want a real Mech simulation as it stands right now Playing the game is simpler and has good effects.
