According to my understanding, it is not used for anything connected to the ball pit playhouse. This is an interesting decoration that I asked myself as well, but it is a little thing. While playing in the Ball pit, my son loves to pick up the jugs and act as if he's drinking out of them.

For assembly, you will need a power screwdriver. It's a wonderful toy, but you should bring one with you. My time spent on it was about an hour, which isn't bad considering the task.
