It is effective. We had the same issue at first, because the cover doesn't appear to be a cover. Everything should be fine if you can just pull it off.
I don't recall because it was a gift, but it didn't have a felt lining, and I doubt a 7" plaque would fit inside. It was not as big as I had anticipated.

This appears to be AMAZING- Unfortunately, there isn't a single bloody thing to be seen in it- br>I mean, it looks REAL, so why would this company go to all the trouble of making something that appears to be worth a lot of money only to disappoint a 5-year-old because it can't focus - Man, someone needs to be thrown overboard.
This (copper) was a present from my husband on our seventh wedding anniversary. It's lovely, and it actually works. It's just a decorative item in our house, but it could be used as a spyglass.
I wish it was a little more weathered than it is now. It didn't work out when I tried to see it through. It's a little shaky, and I had to hold it at an odd angle to get it to work. I bought it for my seventh wedding anniversary, and I'm hoping he doesn't notice the minor flaws.
I haven't opened it up to look through because it will be a Christmas present. It's lovely, and it's also reasonably priced.
It's packaged in a lovely box. My husband adored the copper gift he received for our 22nd wedding anniversary. It's stunning!.
