It's a 1X magnification. To put it another way, this isn't an optical device at all. It's only for show; it worked well as a prop for my pirate costume, but don't expect to see anything through it.
You can focus the object by pulling the outer eye pipe inside.
The color "leather" is more pink than brown in appearance. It's possible that it could be changed with something as simple as shoe polish. My spyglass didn't work as well as yours. For photos or scenes, this is a good prop.
When fully extended, it measures 18 inches long.

To begin, I'd like to comment on a few of the other reviews as well as provide some tips on how to use this device. br>br>The odor that some people have complained about. It smells like actual cured leather, and the pink tone people are complaining about is because the leather is naturally tanned, not dyed fake crap, and I'm not sure how they can afford it at this price point. My only guess is that the leather used on this item is small enough that they were able to use leftovers and small cuttings from a larger Chinese manufacturer. If you're concerned about the slight pink hue, you can dye it or simply wait for it to darken and take on a more brownish hue over time. br>br>Secondly, all of the reviews that claim it doesn't focus no matter which part you spin are incorrect. This is due to the fact that it is not a camera. To focus at different distances, you can move the sections in or out. Finally, don't press the eye piece against your eye lid; you should leave an inch to half-inch of space between your eye and the eye piece so that the forward glass (large lens at the end) and the viewing glass (smaller lens you look through) can be aligned. If you don't line up the two lenses with your field of vision correctly, you'll be looking through the small lens at the inside of one of the brass sections (ie. Instead of looking THROUGH the monoscope, look inside it. br>br>So far, I've used it to look at the moon, get a good view of a barely visible green comet that passed by this week, and try to read passing Hull numbers while at anchor in Boston harbor. I'm amazed at how good this thing is. br>br> The only change I made was to glue a small strip of cork along the insides of the lens cap to make it a little more watertight, which should help it last a little longer on the boat. br>br>As a last suggestion, if you really want to practice using this device, look through a window that has a screen in it. With practice, you'll be able to focus the lenses to bring the screen mesh into focus, then refocus past whatever is close to the window, then refocus even further out to whatever is a moderate distance away, and finally focus out to whatever is the farthest object in your field of vision. It's actually quite cool, and it gives the impression that you're fazing right through the screen. br>br>This monoscope is truly amazing; it's fully functional, hefty, made of incredibly high-quality materials, has a fantastic case design, and is, for lack of a better word, flawless.
This item isn't a precise monoscope, but it's also not just for show. br>Fully extend the spyglass, then push the closest (and narrowest) segment in until it focuses. Although the fit between the segments was not particularly precise, it was smooth. If you're closer than 200', it's usually not worth it to use this. As a side note, I am in the process of relocating to a new location. It still works for me despite being blind - To keep images clear, only binoculars require offsetting focuses. br>br>The leather was in good condition- In natural light, it appeared a little paler, but shades are always difficult to represent online. I plan on darkening the leather with dye, which is simple to do if you look it up online and follow the instructions exactly. TL: TL: TL: TL: TL: TL: TL: TL: TL: TL It is well worth the money; if you require precision, purchase a modern model with a tripod. This is a cosplay piece for a friend, but it is also functional (within reason).
When I was asked to come. br>br>My room has been transformed into a Deadliest Catch set. In some way, all of my favorite boats from the show are represented. This rustic-looking telescope fits in perfectly with the overall theme. It appeals to me. It was carefully wrapped in bubble wrap. br>br> The telescope and its case are encircled. It was in excellent condition when it arrived at my doorstep. I had to work hard to remove all of the bubble wrap. It wasn't a major issue, though.
This is absolutely incredible. I'm not sure why it's considered non-functional. As you can see in the picture, there are three brass sections that you can pull out and then push in or pull out to focus on any object; at its longest, it will focus on the closest thing to you, and as you shorten it, it will focus on things further away. Images that are crisp and clear. If I can keep my eyes steady, I can read a book with small letters from 10 feet away. Given the build quality, I'm very impressed for the price. At the very least, it should be sold for more than thrice the price, but at the current price of less than 20, it's a bargain.
This is a really cute telescope. However, it does not work in practice. It was purchased for its utility. No matter how I adjust the glass, I can only see a sliver of an unfocused crescent. If you're just going for looks for a costume or whatever, this is the way to go. 5 stars. br>br>However, if you're looking for a cheap telescope, you should look elsewhere. br>br>I'd return it, but it wouldn't be worth the trouble. For my nephews' pirate ship, I'm giving it to them. br>br>The bottom line is that this is an overpriced kid's present.
I have to say, this telescope has wowed me. The leather and brass have a lot of fine details. The telescope is 7 1/2 inches long before it is extended. It's nearly 20 inches long when fully extended. I bought it as a photo prop as well as for my office because I am a sucker for vintage items. It looks even better in person than it does on the website, and the leather smells wonderful. Love it!.
For Thanksgiving, I gave it to my husband as a surprise. We took a trip to the falls and did a lot of bird watching. He is a huge fan of all things nautical and was overjoyed to receive this. It comes in a really cool box as well.
This is a fantastic addition to my 27-foot sailboat! br>Solid spyglass, doesn't feel like a toy at all. br>Really brings out the nautical pirate vibes of sailing. The focusing piece is a little loose, but it's otherwise very sturdy. On the subject of focusing, it's a little difficult to do so on a moving boat, but it's worth it because you look cool doing so!.
