Questions & Answers

I'm debating whether or not to purchase this for my 8-year-old son. Is he too old to play with this toy?

This toy is best suited to children aged 8 and up. After 6 months of playing with the toy, my 4-and-a-half-year-old made his first working combination on his own. As an adult, I find the toy to be both entertaining and challenging; it's a high-quality toy with a lot of potential. I believe that a ten-year-old would be quite entertained by these toys. It has been enjoyed by people of all ages who have used it at our house.

Is there a set of marbles included with it?

Yes, there was a bag of marbles included!

Is it necessary to put this together in one of the suggested patterns, or can a child make up their own?

Instructions for building functional tracks are included in every Quadrilla set. More configuration instructions can be found on the Hape website, but it is absolutely possible to create your own tracks by combining sets or parts of expansion packs. After that, the real fun begins! br>Simple linear tracks are fine for small children, but once you understand what each specialized block does, this set can be much more sophisticated. They have function on both the top and bottom halves, as well as from all sides, to guide marbles through the runs, and small children will enjoy the set or extension pack with the musical tone bars. In the Orange Block there's an easy vertical chute which leads down two lines of tunnels, but in the natural wood color blocks there's only a top, side-by-side sliding hole. Lastly, the Yellow Block directs a marble up one of the diagonal lines. br>* The one with the big dot on the side accepts marbles from the top and has a toggle inside that alternately directs the marble out one side or the other.br>* The other red one has a toggle as well, but the openings alternate on 90 degrees. br>As you can see, this is well-designed to allow for a wide range of options. Adults and children alike will find it engaging and enjoyable. It will also provide appropriate challenges for children of various ages. Simply store the more difficult parts until the little ones are ready. br>Also, the parts are designed to be assembled like Legos, but the connector blocks and tracks interlock with small sockets and studs (similar to Legos but with a looser fit). When marbles are rolling, your construction will not move and will not require constant adjustment, but it will be knocked over. It's a great system because part of the fun is adding on and re-arranging things. It is designed in such a way that it will not become outdated. br>My family owns three sets, with a few expansion sets thrown in for good measure. It's a significant investment, but it's also a toy with a lot of learning potential, adaptability, and fun. Quadrilla comes highly recommended from us. Start with a basic set to see how it works for your family, but I'm sure you'll want to buy more. This is a toy that can be passed down through the generations.

What is the approximate number of spiral funnels included in this set? It's unclear whether there are one or three in the description. ?

We bought it in August 2013 and it came with 3 spirals.

Despite the fact that my children enjoy it, it has some significant design flaws, so I'm giving it three stars
3/5

Despite the fact that my children enjoy it, it has some significant design flaws, so I'm giving it three stars.
1. To support a heavier upper load, the base pieces must be wider. Once you get past 2 or 3 blocks high, it's very easy to knock over. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br The tracks appear to be warped, causing the marbles to not travel in the direction they should and to become stuck in a valley created by the warped pieces. I'm not sure if that was done on purpose or if I simply received a defective box of pieces. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. Plastic components can be found. The only reason I bought a wood set was to avoid having to deal with plastic. While the pieces are few, it was disappointing that they were there in the first place, especially since I know that with a little creativity, you can make a wood equilavent. br>br>I'm disappointed because I spent so much money on it, and I'm not sure I'll purchase this brand again.

On the market, there is no better marble run set than this
5/5

By a long shot, the best marble run set available. This set is incredibly well-made, with perfectly fitted pieces and clear instructions. br>From 5 years old to adults, all of the children (and adults) enjoy it. In our family, we have a 9-year-old daughter. Our 9-year-olds and 7-year-olds work together to build and read the directions, and it's wonderful to see how well they get along. br>br>In comparison to the Hape sets, we tried a cheaper (1/3 price) marble set from another company, and it was terrible. br>br>We also bought a basic wood block set, which allowed us to create even crazier marble runs (see photo).

The Marble Run is fantastic
5/5

A plastic marble run had been given to us as a gift, and it was HORRIBLE! It took a long time to put together and was not at all intuitive. br>br>This set is a big hit with my four-year-old daughter. It came with a few suggested builds, all of which were simple to follow. We keep it in a drawer in the playroom's dresser. I use a plastic shoe bin for the block parts and a Sterilite Divided Case for the smaller parts, which works perfectly!

When built, it was not very sturdy - When bumped, it falls over
3/5

The quality is excellent, and I got them at a great price. The instruction booklet is fairly simple to follow (at least for me, not for my children). The fact that these aren't very stable is my biggest complaint. We've attempted to build them several times only to have them collapse when we accidentally hit them. When it takes 10 minutes to build and you only get to see one marble fall before it all falls over, it's very disappointing for a child (and a parent). I don't want to superglue them because I want to be able to change the design and build new things every time, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to make this more durable, I'd appreciate it. I wish we had purchased a better plastic model in retrospect.

for my students (grades 4-8) It's 6 years old, and the quality is excellent
4/5

You will not be dissatisfied with your purchase of the. This was purchased for my fourth-grade students. It's 6 years old, and the quality is excellent. The quality of the work will not let you down. Here are some potential drawbacks, depending on your circumstances. Some of the younger (4-year-olds) have a difficult time following directions and setting up. It should be simple if they are familiar with lego instructions (5s and 6s). Because of the way the different color coded blocks fit together and function, the directions must be followed step by step in order for the run to work properly. The booklet does provide a variety of setup options, and the illustrations are clear. It is not necessary to read anything. Some children may be capable of devising their own operable run, but this has proven difficult for my children thus far. When limited to two people carefully playing with it at the same time, it proves to be quite durable. It can take a minor jolt, but anything more than that will cause it to topple. After spending so much time setting up, there have been a few mishaps. My classroom's floor isn't perfectly level, as I've noticed. We needed to look for a spot that was perfectly level. This is critical because the run relies on momentum gained at the ramps and spirals rather than gravity or sloping to function. The bridges and other structures must be perfectly level. There was a learning curve, and we were required to assist with the construction for at least a week. They can now play with it on their own a little more. Some of these "difficulties," I believe, can be viewed as advantages. fine motor skills, following directions precisely, cooperating with others, problem solving, and so on.

This is a fantastic set with excellent craftsmanship
5/5

We gave this to my almost 5-year-old son for Christmas because he had been asking for a marble run. I was hesitant to spend more money on one because we had bought one a year or two before that was plastic and the pieces cracked and broke almost immediately, so I was hesitant to spend more money on one - I'm glad I did it, though. br>br>This is made of high-quality, attractive wood. The pieces are smooth, and the packaging is convenient for transporting them around the house. The set includes a great booklet with multiple designs to build (along with the option of designing your own) and plenty of marbles. We had a lot of fun creating and testing the various sets. You'll need some inserts and accelerators to make the set work properly, and despite the clear instructions, we frequently forget to put one in, causing our marbles to fall out of the holes too soon. However, it's fun for the kids to test and figure out what we'll need to make it work - Then there's the exhilaration of completing a full run. The only challenge I've seen so far is that because it's a marble run with pieces that slot into each other, it can be a bit wobbly, and we've spent a lot of time building only to have it fall down. br>br>The only challenge I've seen so far is that because it's a marble run with pieces that slot into each other, it can be a bit wobbly, and we've spent a lot of time building only to It's a bummer when you've put in a lot of effort, but things happen. I believe the pieces were designed to fit a little tighter into each other, reducing the risk of an accidental knock-down. It was less than before. Overall, a fantastic set, and we're thinking about getting another (or an add-on) for my son's birthday because he seems to enjoy it. I believe that this set will stand the test of time and use, and that it is well worth the money.
