The choice of decals is wide since there are many different companies you can choose from. Model Railroader Mag is a great forum for model railroading.
If supervised by a 7 yr old and an experienced adult! It's true that I am, too, interested in the technical aspects of steam locomotives, but the kit doesn't explain what the various components do or how they relate to one another, no matter how technically accurate it is. The best way to determine what the pieces are supposed to represent is to do research on steam locomotives on the internet prior to attempting to assemble the kit.
Like a H/O scale train, the engine is around 12 inches and the coal car is roughly 5 inches. Two and a half to three inches
The model is HO scale, but it does not have an engine. A model is all it is. Model cars that you assemble and put in a display case are the same thing.

I agree with previous reviewers that this is a great looking model, but there are a few to be improved upon. Having been an enthusiast for HO trains, this was the only model that I could afford compared to Choosing this track layout for my layout measures 12' x 6', and it looks great on the tracks. I was pleased with how the model turned out. Although some instructions were incorrect (the tender's linkage pin should be shown upside down in figures 38 and 40), most of them were accurate. The first thing I did was spray paint every part flat black plastic. A metallic silver paint job was applied to the wheel rims, firebox, smoke box, headlight, linkage rods, decorative lines, and a couple handrails. A metallic gold paint was applied to the bell. A red paint job was applied to the control valves and the tender taillight. Using thick CA with a fast setting time, the final assembly went very quickly. After applying the decals, I finished the project. As a conclusion, this is a lovely display model that is easy to assemble.
There are quite a few parts to this car, There was one thing I could not locate wrong or damaged in the parts - an upper hand rail on the rear of the tender was broken on one side, but it did not appear that any missing pieces were present. I do not have a problem with this as I am not as much into derail, however, if you're a perfectionist, make sure to check out the contents as soon as you get the package. My second order was a great quality, but a little fiddly if it's your first time (from experience). For some reason I received two sets of decal sheets, which is great as tracking down one for Big Boy 4006 would almost be impossible at this point.
