Is there a single drive motor or two?

There are two drive motors on it.

Is the dcc in charge of direction and speed? Or are you just interested in the sound?

Yes, DCC is in charge of both direction and speed. Stop the engine completely and then reverse direction if it is running at a high speed.

For a bachmann, this GG1 performs admirably. This has made me very happy. It's the first time I've ever encountered a Bachmann. I'm thinking about getting another one.

The engine itself performs as expected, but the pantographs are in need of repair

The engine itself is functional, but the pantographs are extremely fragile. The first came apart right out of the box, and the second fell apart after only a few days of use. I rebuilt them and used thin wire to reinforce the weak connections, but I was surprised I had to do so so soon after purchasing them.
