I'm sorry, but I can't help you. It was bought as a Christmas gift and should be ready in time for the holidays. You might be able to get some help from a Lionel train store.
Box cars like this are plain and simple. I'd say the ones we have do actually play music. They're green and red and actually quite loud when you turn them on. We love them, though.

To make the train look festive under the tree this year, we set it up under the tree in a different way. The train has really intrigued my daughter this year, and she has had a lot of fun adding different cars shaped like Christmas trees. Our daughter loves the reindeer and Santa on this set, and it is a wonderful addition to our train. Having it attached to the flat bed so it does not slide off is great, but the fact that it is easy to release so she can run around with it is nice, too.
It will cost you a little to put animation in my set, but it will be worth it just to have some animation in it. My milk man can come in and out of this car by uncoupling it using the uncoupler track and metal stand that come with this car. I have a few spurs, so I added an uncoupler track to one of them. There is nothing better than watching the action.
As I recall, ever since I remember my father would buy the Lionel Christmas train car for our train set for Christmas every year. I purchased them for my kids when I was a child, and my parents have continued to do so. I enjoy adding the cars to my train now and getting to see all the different designs over the seasons. This years's car looks very cool in red and black but is still very festive. I look forward to adding the cars to my train as well.
Buying these every year is part of our tradition. The theme is fantastic, and the painting is It is not just that these are expensive, but that they are in short supply as well. It has stood the test of time very well for older versions of these Christmas cars.
Just a 9v battery and you're ready to embark on your journey of festive For what it is, it's pretty good value. I wish it could add music, but it's otherwise a pretty good product. A lot of fun for the kids. We put it on the Lionel Peanuts Christmas train.
