It came in a fairly small box with an instruction manual and a plastic baggie that contained each walkie talkie. The back cover of each walkie talkie slides off to reveal four AAA batteries. It turned out the cover needs to be pressed down harder to slide back on if it's not easy to slide back on. I originally bought these for my 5 year old son so he could take them on the hiking trips with us. However, he enjoyed them so much that he was running around the house with one while giving my dad and I the other (the word "over" was used frequently). He could turn on the hands-free mode or the side button if he wanted no buttons. The buttons were simple to push and kid-friendly in size (Really, he would only need to press the side button to turn it on). The sounds were so intense each time a button was pushed, I thought I was going crazy When I pulled out the manual, I discovered that the beeping when I pushed a button or sent a message was actually turn off (if it is turned off a sound will only be made if a button is pushed when the lock is on). My favorite thing about these walkie talkies was that they were wireless. Although we only use them less than half a mile apart so I can't really comment on distance, they are really clear and they don't bother us if they're close together (kid still likes to use them even if I'm right next to him). My children played with them all day since we put the batteries in (not included). I made sure they were on the same channel as well. Children spend much more time playing outside (a bonus! The batteries are not easily removable but can be installed by parents with ease by removing the battery cover. Along with the lamp or flashlight function, they are backlit. Purchases from this company would not faze me in the future.

As I'm trying to get my child to speak more, I bought this along with a number of other writing and talking So far, the battery life has worked well -- we have been using it for over two weeks now without a charge. Four batteries seem to have been used and it still states near full charge. There are a variety of choices on the menu. It was a bit advanced for a 2 year old, so not necessarily a toy for a 2 year old. However, Mom and I will continue to play with them until I can give them to her. In addition to powering on, the menus may be switched around by pressing the power button. Although I am not very advanced, this is still a bit challenging. Neither I nor the codes can tell what they I am sure I can find it on Google. In any case, the quality of the sound is great, and it can also be used to walkie-talkie. There is not a lot of static in the sound and there is a great range. There are four AA batteries required per device, which is a bit of a bummer, but I am not sure how long they will last. The channels can be difficult to figure out, but once you have it on the right channel it makes it easy to use. The set will be purchased for Christmas for my daughter, so we will have 4 total sets. Their love for them is endless! In all honesty, I was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality. It has a very clear sound and doesn't produce feedback when you place them up close. A few years ago, we had another pair of walkie talkies that cost twice as much, these are much better. It is amazing how much can be accomplished with a few years of technology! There is a flashlight included as a bonus! Further, we tested the maximum distance these could be used before they failed. The signal at home failed to last long enough for me to drive out of the neighborhood and to the next intersection before I lost signal. I was amazed at their reaction!.

Two of our precocious children each got one of these as a gift for Christmas. He is my Grandson, who is 5 years old. Our family has a cell phone and he is fascinated by it.
