I find this to be a delightful little grocery market, and a nice gift, provided you apply the stickers yourself, especially if you are buying it as a gift for a child, but more about In this review, I plan to break it down by the negatives to begin with, and then highlighting the positives later. The Calico Critter fans remember the wonderful Supermarket set released a few years ago which won a toy award. If you can find that, it is actually a better value because of the amount of small groceries and especially the darling, tiny, cardboard goods accessories that look so realistic. You could also go for the older Supermarket, even though it costs a little more. If you only have space for an older grocery store in your Calico Critters collection, then go for the older Supermarket. It is important to mention right away that although there are no figures included in the kit, the included booklet features the enterprising Marshmallow mouse mother running the store. However, you have the option of choosing and purchasing separately whichever family you prefer to run the store. THE NEGATIVES ARE Compared to the previous release, there are way fewer accessories in the new one. I find the accessory department to be rather disappointing. The accoutrements for this grocery market are very cute. It was easy to assemble. It's small, but not tiny. They can be easily lost, so it is best to keep them in a small bag or box after play. It is difficult to reposition the stickers since they stick very well and cannot be easily moved. It has a very cute check out counter that pushes the groceries from the belt into a basket if the child desires it to do so. It is not included in the purchase of the actual calico critters. The accessories she has with her calico critters make her very happy. As soon as she opened the gift, she was delighted, but even her dad and grandpa noted that the little market was very detailed. It has quite a few tiny pieces, so it is probably not the best item to have around babies. This is her third critter toy, and she enjoys it every time. She is 9 years old.
There are way too many items, all of which are way overpriced, and all the pieces are made very cheaply. The pieces are so tiny that she loves to handle them and she is old enough to do it. However, what is really disappointing is that they give you stickers to adhere to the little items and the stickers are usually too big so you have to cut them down. I still think they are worth it because my daughter loves them.
It is a gift my daughter got for Christmas. It was found early under the bed by accident, so I let her have it before I got up. Her reaction was very positive and it was a fun project. Calico Critter stuff is just what she gets for Christmas morning, and I cannot wait. For young kids to play with, this is excellent quality and just too cute to resist.
There is a lot of realism in the grocery set. There is only one caution, and that is that this toy contains a significant number of small pieces, as with all Calico Critter toys. Since they are so realistic and well made, they can easily get lost over time.
