Questions & Answers

Is this a game that adults enjoy (it appears to be aimed at children)?

It's a great deal of fun. I don't believe children will understand! If you enjoy the number 8, this is the place to be. This is for you, if you're a fan of 8-bit video games. I've only ever played with adults, and every single one of them enjoyed it!

It's simple to pick up and play, and it's a lot of fun
5/5

I got it because my husband and I enjoy playing Boss Monster together, and I enjoy tile-laying games. It was incredibly simple to pick up; all I had to do was watch a 10-minute game on YouTube and I was ready to go. The scoring system is a little complicated, but it's not too bad. We played six rounds, and I won all of them. The more rounds we played, the more hubby came around, and the scoring in each game became more and more tight. The boards are thick and the overall quality is good. The graphics are comparable to that of a boss monster. Consider video games from the 1980s and 1990s. I'd recommend it to a gamer who enjoys medium-weight titles.

To get the most points, "pick a set" of tiles from the ones you're given
4/5

This is a "pick a set" type of game that has recently become popular, with Cascadia and Calico having a similar core gameplay system. Pick a set refers to selecting one random terrain tile from a set of four available to the current player. A random monster, mini-boss, or other creature is paired with the terrain tile. From the bag, choose a boss, crystal, or portal. So you get one terrain tile and one random monster, mini-game, to place on your board. To use, you'll need a boss, a crystal, or a portal. At the end of each player's turn, the chosen set is replaced with random draws, giving the next player four options. This process continues until each player's game grid is completely filled. Different types of terrain have different scores. Consider the following scenario: Forests are worth 1, 2, or 3 points each plus bonus points if you have the majority of them, graveyards are worth 1, 2, or 3 points each plus bonus points if you have the majority of them, dungeon tiles are worth points based on the number of unique terrain types adjacent to them, and so on. It's also worth another point if the monster's preferred terrain type matches the terrain it's on. If the same type of monster appears in a row or column on the terrain grid, it scores points. The player who has the most points at the end of the game wins. br>br>The following are included in the game:
- 5 double- player boards with two sides (one side is a grid that fits 3x4 terrain tiles, the other is 4x4 so you can change the length of the game as desired)br> - 10 sets of 12 terrain tiles (five of which are chosen for each game) and the monsters and crystal pieces that go with them (the different terrains are: Forests, caves, swamps, orc camps, cemeteries, deserts, summoning circles, volcanoes, cloud islands, and castles)br> 8 dungeon terrain tiles (included in all games)br> 10 boss cards (each player selects one per game)br> Deck of terrain drafting cards (to ensure that the terrain used in the game is random)br> - Deck of command cards (as a bonus)br> - Mini-portal and portal Tokens of the bossbr> - A token bag (used to pull monster, crystal, and portal tokens during the game - Ours had extra string on the inside that had to be cut away to make pulling out the units easier)br> - br>Rules for solo play on a sheetbr> Score sheets in a padbr> - The storage tray is nice - it's made of plastic and has a lid. br>br>The storage tray is nice - it's made of plastic and has a lid. Each terrain type has a location where all of the terrain's associated pieces are kept. However, there is a vacancy in one of the slots. There appears to have been a missed opportunity to add another terrain type. The tray is molded to hold some additional pieces that are not included in the game but can be purchased separately from the manufacturer. (However, those pieces aren't required for the game to function - They simply hold the tile stacks from which the game's sets are replaced. Your tabletop serves the same purpose. )br>br>The game is quick to play, has enough strategy to keep it interesting (which terrain types should I collect, where should I place them to maximize my points, do I pick a set that won't get me many points but will deny my opponent a lot of points, etc. ), and has nice Gameboy/Nintendo-style pixel art, so it's a good game for those looking for a simple "pick a set" board game that plays quickly but You can't plan a perfect strategy because the terrain and monster tiles are drawn at random in each game. Working with what you have to maximize your points is the most enjoyable part of the game.

It's a lot of fun (and it's not difficult to pick up)
5/5

After playing it twice at a friend's house, I decided to purchase it, and I am not disappointed. This game is simple to explain and learn, but it is challenging and varied enough to avoid becoming monotonous. The game can be played with two players, but it is more fun with more. We don't play with the "boss card" expansion because it feels unbalanced, but the original game is plenty. Right now, it's getting a lot of play.

Nice try, but as a game, it's hit or miss
3/5

This is dressed up much more as a strategy game than the original boss monster series, but the amount of randomness makes it far too difficult to plan and execute effective strategies - Particularly since opponents can easily disrupt the higher-point-value tactics.

Great game with a simple gameplay and good graphics! This game is so much fun to play that we bought it for our 8-year-old son's birthday and he quickly learned how to play it
5/5

You can easily switch things up and have new goals and wars with each playthrough thanks to the various levels and lengths of game play. br>br>While the rules are simple, the game can become overwhelming once you get past the basics. After a few games (each game lasted about 20 minutes for us), you'll get the hang of it. After 30 minutes, you've gotten into the swing of things. br>br>The product is of excellent quality, well constructed, and the artwork is extremely appealing. Definitely worth the money. br>br>I strongly advise you to use it for your next game night.

Love it

This game is a lot of fun without being too competitive; I usually take games very seriously, but this is just pure fun. The solo campaign is adequate, so don't buy it solely for that reason.
