It is unquestionably beneficial in terms of aiding learning. I use these to teach math using a ten frame. I also let my son build things, which helps him learn about stems. These can also be used to aid in the reading process. Use three magnets (red, yellow, and green or blue color) and have your child slowly pronounce each letter, with green or blue (side of the magnet) meaning go (put all the letters together and say the word!).
