Yes! Easily! I just tried it on for you, and it fits perfectly, with plenty of room around the pencil. If you wanted to, you could use a thicker tool. It's not quite as large as a Sharpie marker, but it's bigger than a number two pencil. I hope this information is useful.
Without a doubt! 18 mo - This toy is best introduced at the age of two years. My baby girl is 18 months old as well. She adores these beads, but she needs help lacing them. Over half of the toys she plays with have a rating of 3 for safety reasons, not because they are inaccessible to younger children. While a child with an unusually large mouth could theoretically wrap the lace around his or her neck or choke on a bead, the chances of this happening with parents present are slim to none.
These were given to someone as a present. I'm not sure how long the laces are, but I do know she adores them, and they've already ordered a second set.
My two-year-old is beginning to learn how to lace, but she is still struggling. I believe that a three and four-year-old could do it.

I had to remove these due to these two safety concerns, and I'm disappointed that these factors were not considered when designing a higher-end toddler toy. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> When I wrote my first review, my daughter was almost two years old. She's almost four years old and loves to play with these. She doesn't get them stuck on her fingers anymore, and she doesn't eat them. I wouldn't recommend them for small children under the age of three, but they are appropriate for preschoolers.
This was ordered for Christmas, and I just learned that Melissa and Doug have had lead paint recalls.
One of my red cylinders is supposed to be orange, and the other is supposed to be red. And, contrary to popular belief, the insides of most of them aren't as smooth as they appear. It's not ideal to have a toddler who wants to cram perfectly sized fingers into the holes! I'm afraid the wood will splinter, and that will be painful! Also, because the holes aren't smooth, the strings won't hold up, and they already don't glide on smoothly.
I got these for my three-year-old son who is in Occupational Therapy because the beads they were trying to have him work with were too small for my comfort level. My son is developmentally delayed and also has sensory needs that he meets through oral stimulation, so most of everything goes in his mouth, so I looked on Amazon for ones that were more for him and found these. I don't let him play with them outside of therapy sessions because I don't want him to get bored with them and lose them. To give them a unique quality that will catch his eye during his sessions. He loves these things; they come with several shoe string type laces that we use to stack and also to play with on a pencil to help him work on his fine motor skills, and he does so well with them, as I mentioned. I can see them being a hazard to small fingers because our son sticks his fingers in them all the time, but I don't let him play with them unsupervised and wouldn't buy them unless they were for his therapy, so that's something to think about when buying them. Overall, working with him in sessions has been a lot of fun, and they've really helped him understand the lesson that his therapist is trying to teach him with his small fingers.

Melissa and Doug toys have always been a favorite of mine. This was not a well-made product. The inside of the wooden string beads is rough, making it difficult to thread the string through the bead and move it down the string. I wish I'd bought some plastic beads instead. They have a slick interior and are easy to string.
For the past nine months, these have been a favorite of my daughter's, who received them for her second birthday and has played with them on a daily basis. With heavy toddler use, the strings have held up well, with only minor paint chipping on the beads. br>*Bonus* if you throw a string full of these at an intruder, they'll do a lot of damage, as evidenced by the dents on my furniture when my toddler got excited about shaking and swinging her beads around and making music.
This is not the case with these lacing beads. The holes in the beads are far too large for the string that comes with them. I tried tying six knots on the string on top of each other, but the beads still slipped through. You'll need a much thicker string if you're going to use beads with such large holes. I'm going to send these back. They are not something I would recommend. The beads are incompatible with the intended application.
