If you can do so safely, you can mount it to a door. It's not a good idea to put it on a hollow core door. Perhaps a steel door. It's best if you put it in front of the door. For me, it's a win-win situation.
Simply cut all the way around the circle as indicated on the back. The point where the two plastic zip ties come together will be visible. A sharp blade can be used to cut through these. You'll be able to take the Master Lock out of its plastic packaging once that's been cut. Best of luck!
You choose one to twelve symbols (0 through 9, *,) for the combination, but pressing the correct symbols in any order will open the lock.

Five years ago, I purchased the first of these products and used it on a sporadic basis. It was mounted to a brick wall with lead anchors under our carport (protected from rain and direct sunlight) and worked well for a while, until one day three years ago when it simply would not open, no matter how many times I tried over the course of two days. I reasoned that it was possible that I had accidentally pressed the combo reset button, which had reset the combo. In the end, I used a hammer to smash it against the brick wall and pry it open, then bought a new one, assuming it was user error. In the last two years, I've installed the new box, set the combination, and opened it successfully about five times. A similar issue exists today. The temperature outside is 65 degrees Fahrenheit, so metal expansion or contraction shouldn't be an issue. I tried several times to open the box, but it would not unlock. This mechanism's design and/or poor manufacturing have left me extremely disappointed. I would not recommend this product because it is useless if you are unable to access it when you require it.
I chose this lock to serve as a small storage box for my safe's keys. Overall, it accomplishes the task at hand; however, I wish it did so a little more efficiently. Advantages: br>br>
> Construction that is both solid and long-lasting This thing is substantial, and you get the impression that the box is solid. br> Mounting brackets for flush wall mounting (this is the current configuration I'm using)br> a plastic cover for outdoor usebr>br>contrary to popular beliefbr>br>
> It was a little difficult to get the keys in there because it was so small.
> In a vertical mounting configuration, keys are difficult to store. I had to use some sticky magnets to install the magnets. br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br The way you think about code isn't the way it actually works. The cylinders on the backside of the key panel are rotated to program a code using the included tool. But, in that case, the code's order is irrelevant. Let's say your code is "1-" as an example. You don't have to enter the code "1-" if you're using the number 4" 4", you could just type those numbers in any order and the lock would open.
> Not only must the code be opened, but it must also be closed. This becomes tedious quickly. br>br>However, as I previously stated, it serves its purpose. But I believe there is a better solution out there, and I will most likely replace this one once I find it.
We bought it in November of last year, so it's been seven months. We got locked out the other day and tried to get the spare key by opening our lock box. The key pad code didn t unlock the lock box (yes, I'm 100% sure what the code was). Fortunately for us (in this situation), a few blows with a large rock broke open the entire box. We didn't get the level of protection we expected. Batting . 000 on the two features of a lock box that are absolutely necessary.
You must place your keys on the open door and hope that they will arrange themselves as you close the door in such a way that it closes properly. It usually takes a few tries before I can give a big "Woo hoo!" "Every time I get it closed on the first try because it's so difficult to close. " My keys are likely to be damaged and/or bent as a result of this. There should be a hook to hang them on on the inside. This is not the box for you if you want to store multiple keys in a locked box. I need to lock up four, and I dread having to use this device on a daily basis. It was a complete waste of money, but I hope that my review will encourage others to continue looking for a better option.
THE GOOD: If you're like me, this is a good way to keep keys for tractors, ATVs, and other farm equipment mounted in a relatively secure place in your barn or shed, rather than hiding them on a nail or in the equipment's chassis. It's important to note that I said "relatively secure. " ” if’you’are looking for something 100% theft- Look for something that bolts to concrete or is encased in concrete if you want proof (if that's possible). Others claim that with enough determination, this key safe can be cracked open. Let's face it, this isn't going to happen. Without a key, a determined thief can break into almost anything or simply hot wire or tow away the equipment. However, if you live in a relatively crime-free area and simply want to keep your belongings from being "borrowed" by neighborhood kids for joy rides, this item will suffice. It's about the same price as a spare key to one of my ATVs, and it's a convenient location where the family knows to return the keys when they're done using the equipment (rather than a random nail in a barn beam). THE BAD: br>br> So what's the deal with only four stars? Because, even with properly sized pilot holes, the Phillips mounting screw heads cam out and strip out far too easily when driving them into a beam. Please, Master Lock, spend a few dollars and provide us with some decent screws, or just leave them out. I eventually settled on Torx deck screws, which proved to be far more effective. Overall, it's a good key storage solution, and it's much better than my previous method.
