permanent water line to a trailer so we didn't have to bury it deep (or even at all in some places) but it didn't freeze. We did a lot of research on how to use heat trace cable, including how to install and insulate it, as well as how it works, and we were very meticulous in our installation. We've had 20-plus people use it since it was installed. If the water in the trailer does not trickle because it has been below freezing for 30 days and/or nights, it freezes solid, defeating the purpose of using the heat trace. We thought it was a fluke, so we kept trying and hoping we did something wrong and could fix it, checking the electrical connection and researching it further, etc. , but it just does nothing and doesn't seem to be an issue in our understanding of what it should do or in our installation, just a faulty wire. At this point, it's half buried and imbedded in piping and insulation, so there's no undoing or redoing the work; we'll just have to waste water.
I had assumed that the heating was controlled by a sensor at the cable's end. So I put it in an ice bucket to see if it heated up. After 30 minutes, it still hadn't happened. As a result, I returned it and received a replacement in a very short time (3 days). I also immersed the part of the cable closest to the outlet (the part with the obvious bump) in ice this time to test it. It worked perfectly after I did that. I took away a star because the documentation was terrible and didn't specify which part of the cable contained the temperature sensor. At the very least, the seller provided an immediate replacement.
Despite the fact that using a heater on a hose is not recommended, it worked wonders in keeping my RV's fresh water hose from freezing and icing up. I spirally tied the heater wire to the hose and then insulated the entire length with air conditioning black foam pipe insulation, using 1. Foam with a diameter of 50 inches on the inside. I'm happy with the results, and the hose doesn't get too hot. It also uses very little electric current due to the low amperage. If you're going to use it for the same reason I did, make sure you wrap and insulate the fixture supply pipe as well. The light indicator at the plug, which indicates whether or not the heater is powered, is a nice added bonus. br>Excellent product of excellent quality.
This is what I used for my trailer's water line. Setup is a breeze.
It's great because the RV Hose doesn't get frozen.
Water pipes in the winter are ideal.
It's a great product, and they walk you through the installation process to make it as simple as possible, but it still takes time. It works well, and there's plenty of hardware included.
