Questions & Answers

Is the attachment for mechanical dust extraction that is shown in the photo included?

Yes, but this tiny bag has never been used by me. That would only apply to small jobs. My deck is complete, and I am now working on my dock. It works just like a shop vacuum because the blower on the sander is so strong that you don't need the additional suction of a shop vacuum, or the weight of it to haul around. I directly hook it to the small size shop vacuum hose (through a piece of single diameter tube adopter I improvised), and dump the dust into a 5 gallon construction bucket, through a piece of low thread count scrap bed sheet, held in place by a bungee cord; it works Although this is still difficult work, there is no better tool available.

Is this model equipped with auto tracking, as is the case with the 21-inch model? Is it possible to keep track of it?

I'm not sure if it supports auto-tracking. However, I've had no issues with it in over 100 hours of use. The new belt stays in place once I've centered it. In fact, it's the best 4" belt sander I've ever used. br>It's big, strong, and fast, and it runs like a champ. It's what I use to smooth rough sawn lumber that's too big for my planers to handle.

Is there a belt already attached to the sander? or did I get one that had been previously used?

A belt is already attached to the Makita 9403. Thank you, BW2! br>br>

Is the voltage 220 volts or 110 volts?

This is something I wish I had purchased years ago
5/5

I installed a new oak floor in my living room, and I didn't want to risk it by using a professional drum sander, so I went with a belt sander, even though it took longer. I decided to buy this sander after reading the reviews on Amazon. I tried it out on a scrap 2x12 and it worked perfectly. I will not hesitate to use it to refinish all of the floors in the house. Because the bag is nothing more than an advertisement flag and this sander is out to eat the cord,,,I rolled the cord in a tight roll and tie wrapped it down, then I used a sum pump hose in place of the bag, had to build it up with tape and a hose clamp to hook to a shop vacuum, then taped an hose clamp to hook to a shop vacuum, then taped an hose clamp to hook to a shop vacuum, then taped an.

This is a purchase I will not be sorry for
4/5

at all. First and foremost, this is an excellent belt sander. I purchased this to avoid having to rent a large floor sander multiple times to finish the floors in my upstairs bedrooms. With 80 grit, I was able to finish a 14 x 13 room in no time. The vacuum system kept clogging up, which was the only problem I had. To be fair, I was working with softer wood, and there were a few small pieces of carpet foam left over from a less than thorough cleaning. See pics. I just took out the four screws that held the silver plate in place and cleaned out the fins and tunnel. Because there is little tolerance for heavy dust and debris, this will have to be done frequently. However, if you're working with hardwood and don't have a lot of debris, the vacuum should work fine. When a vacuum cleaner is in good working order, it leaves very little dust behind.

It has great balance and doesn't smack you around like my does
5/5

I am a weekend woodworker who sells my tables. My favorite species to work with are walnut and cherry with a natural edge, and my 4 x 24 inch sander was a Porter Cable until recently. Because it is so aggressive, I used to call it the "beast," and I recently chewed up the power cord with it, so I decided to treat myself to a new sander. I purchased the Makita after reading the Amazon reviews. It's a truly exceptional sander. It has great balance, and unlike my old Porter Cable, it doesn't beat you up. It produces excellent results, and I am extremely pleased with it. Make sure you get a Makita sander if you're going to get a "big dog" sander. br>NOTE: THIS PAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED. I've had the sander for more than 5 months and have completed 12 coffee and consul tables from rough cut to finished surface. This sander is out of this world. Never gouges the skin, and it's a joy to work with. It's so well balanced that I can run it with just one hand.

It has a lot of power, but it isn't smooth, and it burns through belts
3/5

This item has a lot of power and smoothness to it, but it isn't too loud. Update. br>br> After I first bought it, I only used it for a few weeks. I tried to use it a lot yesterday. It blew up a bunch of belts, which aren't cheap. I tried a number of different belt and grit manufacturers, and they all failed me. There were a few things that caught my attention. The front roller heats up quickly and is not perfectly round. On it are some strange milling marks. This causes it to skip, and the entire sander's action isn't smooth enough; there's a constant "thump thump thump," which you can see in the pattern of dust left on the board as you go. Yes, I had a dust collector attached to it. The read rubber roller also has an unusual raised ridge. I won't be buying anything from Toolmarts again because they won't accept it back because it's been a few months since I bought it. Now I'll have to take it to a local repair shop, which will most likely take several hours.

A heavy-duty sander that delivers flawless results
5/5

A heavy-duty, top-of-the-line sander that delivers flawless results. With Prime, you can get it in 2 days and start sanding 200 8-inch circles right away. pressure-treated deck boards for feet I sanded many deck boards with the factory supplied 80 grit Makita sanding belt before getting careless and ripping the sanding belt, so I'm a little more careful how I apply the sander to the wood now. One thing to note: while replacing the belt, I noticed black debris stuck on the rollers and platen, so I cleaned the entire sander thoroughly. The sanding wood dust working in between the sanding belt, the rollers, and the platen, I believe, is the cause of these. If this continues to accumulate, it may cause performance issues in the near future, as well as damage to the sanding belt, sander, and the wood piece I'm working on. Every few hours of use, I resolve to remove the sanding belt and clean the sander rollers and platen as needed. The sanding belt tracks perfectly, and I never had to adjust the tracking screw. br>The sander is heavy enough that I don't need to apply any downward pressure; all I have to do is guide it along the length of the wood. The dust catcher bag works well, and the Makita 9403 sander produces no dust cloud. Because of the sander's aggressiveness in removing the amount of wood surface, I have to empty the bag every now and then to allow the sander and sanding belt to cool down. I attempted to connect a small shop vac to the sander dust output nozzle, but I didn't have the correct size adapter, necessitating yet another trip to my local home improvement store! br>This sander emits a lot of hot air from the front handle port, which is not very noticeable if you are right-handed but very noticeable if you are left-handed and hold the front handle with your right hand; the hot exhaust is very hot and uncomfortable on the right wrist if used continuously. As I am ambidextrous and would switch from left to right hand operation as needed, I am considering designing some type of flexible air rechanneling to alleviate this minor issue. br>Aside from these minor flaws, the Makita 9403 is an excellent, well-designed tool that I would purchase again if someone borrowed it and did not return it. I'd tell others about it! I'd give it a 4 out of 5. If that option was available, I'd give it five stars instead of four because I'm so happy with this tool! Makita, you've done a fantastic job!.
