I used it to drill pilot holes for wood screws up to 1/4 inch in diameter.
The hole might work well as a nail or screw starter hole. If you're using brads, don't go too far into the wood with the awl. If you're driving a screw into wood, a hammer on the awl will create a deeper hole, making it easier to drive the screw in.

I bought a few of these to punch 29 gauge roofing/siding panels like RR Buildings demonstrated on YouTube. I have the ability to punch holes ("pre-punch"). drill") takes around 9 minutes. I've punched about 300 holes in the panels so far, and I'm currently using two of the four that I purchased, neither of which shows any bending or wear. The hardened spike/rod is fully embedded in the plastic handle, providing a striking surface for your hammer. br>br>I am extremely pleased with this purchase. It's not being used as a scratch awl or a marking tool, but rather as a punch, and it's holding up beautifully.
To start a hole-in-one quickly and easily. Especially when it comes to your woodworking endeavors. Instead of trying to use your wood screw as a drill bit when you don't have one, this handy tool allows you to mark your starter hole while also adding starter threads.
To install window shades, I used this tool. Working in tight quarters, I used it to pilot my hole with a hammer to make screwing in the screws easier. It was sufficient to prevent blisters from forming while working on the same project without the awl. I strongly advise you to include this tool in your toolbox.
This thing is a huge improvement over the old malco scratch awls I used to use during my 13 years as a sheet metal worker. It's a little longer than I'm used to, but I like how the metal extends all the way through the handle to create a strike point when using a hammer to make a punch mark for layout or a pilot hole for anything. All around, this is a fantastic scratch awl.
It's nice and sharp, pointy and straight. It's not like the one it's supposed to replace.
But it's all set. It has a great look and feel to it.
It's quite effective.
I upgraded from my previous model, and I'm glad I did. Take a look at the difference. br>br>.
