From a random sample of 3, I have found no indication of the country of origin. I have 24 of these and looked at a random sample of 3. There is only a Bessey logo and XM5 and 2" stamped on the side. My experience with them is that they are quality clamps and I prefer them to older Pony/Jorgensen clamps and certainly to HF clamps.

While it may indeed open wider, the jaws would no longer be parallel, which makes fighting the springs a little more.

The price of less than 3 bucks was not what I expected (I've spent much more on tools recently that fall apart from the first use), but they work well. There are times when the rubber tips fall off, but they can be fixed with some glue. Great quality. I'm very happy with it.
