Questions & Answers

Our flooring guy recommended that we use this under water-based polyurethane when we are refinishing floors. What is the bonding strength of poly to ?

The last time I used water was in the 1990s I covered it with oil-based polyurethane, but I have been using oil-based polyurethane I used a polyurethane-based product, and it worked quite It nervous me at first because I wasn't sure what would happen, so I experimented on a scrap of the same material (pine) that I used for the "real" item. Shellac did not need to be sanded or prepped in any way before it was painted. The polyurethane was literally applied right on top of the shellac (the shellac had been dry for a few did not peel, cloud, become slimy, or do anything like that. Afterwards, it bonded to it and gave it a beautiful finish.

How long will it take this product to create a superior finish with multiple coats Why do high gloss finishes look so good?

A few coats have been applied, but the finish didn't seem to be very high-quality a glossy surface The finish is just soft and beautiful.

The knotty pine from the kitchen is from the 50s and I'm trying to match it. What will happen if this sinks into the knotts and makes them dark like the old wool?

There is Orange Shellac on the wall. The wood will darken due to the chemical reaction. The first thing I'd do is to experiment with a piece of the new wood. Put a double coat of varnish on the knots.

Are there any outdoor furniture that can be used with it?

If the sun is out, do not wear it.

Finishes traditionally produced by hand are regarded as a lost art
5/5

Fine furniture tended to be finished in shellac in the 1800s, and even in times past. Arcane is the word given to it because nobody can seem to figure out how to use it. In their first attempts with shellac they failed so badly that they went back to polyurethane, which is also a very good finish, and does not have the same tendency to fail. Using Shellac straight out of the can is not the best process. To pour Zinssers into a separate clear container with a screw-on top, dip a small measuring cup into some Zinssers before pouring them into it It is on the Make a thin liquid not much thicker than soda pop by adding alcohol to it. As we brush it on, it will almost dry in seconds since it is so thin. The next brush stroke must be added as soon as possible, starting and working from one side to the other. going wet to wet, all the way over to the other side, and the first side will be dry as you complete the last side. The wood stool in my photos received a half dozen coats with only about fifteen minutes delay between them. As a result, the accumulation of coats is now thick enough to fill in the little irregularities in the wood's After letting it cure overnight, I scoured it with steel wool until it was dead smooth like a After you have applied a coat of wax and buffed it out with a soft cloth, the surface is now ready for wax.

If you need a full quart, and you have the space to apply it evenly, it is good

Follow-up This is the latest update (19 July It took me a little while to get used to this shellac as I had another project that required it. This time, I had a much more positive experience. one of the reasons is that I actually got the right accessories, and they were of a high quality to help make everything go smoothly. The first thing I did, since I had multiple grits of sandpaper that were even finer than what was recommended between coats of shellac, was to go out and buy what they prescribed - a 120 grit paper. Two hundred and twenty grit is a coarse sand. As well, I got a brush of "high quality" It should be something that can remove oil stains and odors There are also finishes that are based on metals. The tip of my pen is also angled It seems like these are to be expected for a lot of projects that may call for I found a can of denatured alcohol even though I had so many thinners and cleaners to choose from As part of the directions for cleanup, this was explicitly mentioned. Despite the failure to reach a perfect result, this model is actually quite Whatever shortcomings I encounter come more from my (still) limited experience user of the software. However, I just wanted to point out One of the great advantages of shellac is the ability to sand it off and start over if you mess up. I mentioned this several times over the course of this article. It takes just an hour to switch coats, making the loss of time as small as possible. This is br>
. I use this shellac mostly for guitar necks, as I mentioned previously. The shellac is likely to hold for the longest when it is in good contact with the wood, even though it does not stain it. Clearcoats aren't the only surface treatment that is used on wood, so take note that grain filler may have been used as well When there is a grain fill on the wood, the same effect will occur as if the wood was clear finished. You may notice that the shellac is dripping, sagging, or getting blotchy. This is the original

This review might be best taken with a grain of salt and a pinch of salt. As a starting point, I want to highlight the following big pluses It has a really nice amber hue to it, and you can actually sand it off or re-polish it It needs to be worked on. Furthermore, you can put the product on top of just about anything (seriously) to achieve a deep amber effect. Additionally, you can put it on top of subsequent layers to achieve the exact degree of amber you desire. In the current state of affairs This is the problem I have with my specific projects (guitar necks) that require this program. Rest of the time, I struggle to get this stuff to go on evenly, without clumps and drips. I had a small success in a small patch (roughly 2"X2"). My issue would probably not arise if I were simply varnishing floors or tables. My difficulty is probably more due to my inexperience with this stuff, so thank goodness I can take it off. As for learning curves, I want to emphasize that some projects require a little bit of effort. It is easy and fast to use Minwax or similar stains on woodworking projects - I have done a lot of them If you don't actually need or want to use the amber color, consider this option. This is br>
. In addition, I have heard that some applications need some sort of clearcoating over the top to make them more durable. Keeping that in mind is a good idea It is not uncommon for some people to enjoy an all-encompassing visit In other words, my last complaint might not apply to others, but this can is a big problem if you only work on small projects from time to time. There may be no obvious reason why the lid should not seal tightly, but if you fail to do so, you may find that the contents of the can are In a way, it's a mental value lost thing for me Now that you have a project for the stuff, you find out that 80 percent of it is useless. You will have to order another can of this stuff if you want to finish it with this particular material It comes in a can of qt. I just wanted to point out that it's not only Amazon that seems to carry these products in the big one-stop shops This is the only size they have at Home Depot, which is why I initially chose not to buy from them.

A1 Rust-Oleum Zinsser 704H in Bulls Eye, 1 Quart A transparent clear coating of amber shellac
5/5

My business has been building "heirloom" quality custom woodwork for 30+ years. This shellac is a great choice for most species of wood, but I discourage use on any exotic wood type The CTC. 3) Wood with oily or natural wax should be cleaned with acetone and diluted solution Then shellac was applied and the surface was sanded to 100-grit The first coat of Amber was applied in 120 before the twelfth coat was applied This will darken as you add coats, the more you apply, the darker it will be. A shellac only has a problem when it is used in places that are highly moist or where UV rays are present. dry flakes and mix yourself. A shelf is included in this product - It has a life expectancy of six years Generally between 9 and 12 months Overall, this is the best premixed shellac on the market, and Zinsser deserves a lot of praise for maintaining a high quality product for so many years. Amazon is to be thanked for the cheap price and fast delivery. I wish each of you a happy woodworking experience.

Cans that have been badly damaged
3/5

It should be disclosed in the item's description that it is severely dented if you're going to sell it. Apparently these cans of varnish were thrown down the stairs because they look as if they were dropped. Thank you - This product is sold The Amazon website. Is a division of com services corporation.

A new formula is used instead of the old one
5/5

Stain (7- Four layers of dryer fabric) and completely dry Four days is a reasonable time frame to let it dry. It should be out of the direct sun and in the shade. The other one was cleaned with a tissue after my wife sat on one of them. There were visible horrible marks on the area where she sat because it scratched. There is still sanding and refinishing to It took me several hours to finish it. Unlike SHELLAC there is no similarity between the two. Purchase or use this product at your own risk. Like three years ago, I used it as a bench and on shelves. In terms of durability and resistance, it was exceptional. To be honest, it is a totally different product from what it used to be.

It is a good thing that this is available online in addition to the local hardware stores
5/5

My local hardware store doesn't carry amber, which I often use to refinish antique woodwork, which gives it a warm glow when refinished. I'm glad this is available online since my local hardware stores don't carry it. I was able to make my projects look exactly like the.

An amber finish makes it stand out
5/5

It ended up taking me two quarts of this on a good day The tool cabinet I built was too big for the carport, so I didn't paint it. However, it would be outside, so I needed some protection from the weather. My favorite thing about this shellac was its amber color They ended up giving it a life of their own Upon sealing, it will appear as if it's still open. The process is much easier than staining and protecting gradually. I had a great time All brushes need is some denatured alcohol to clean them. It is also possible to let the shellac completely dry on the brushes to help protect the bristles, then clean them when they are time.

This product works well when French polishing is used
4/5

The stuff works well with the advice I found online about french polishing an instrument, so I'm learning the method. There would be more colors if they had them. It's fine, I bought pigment for it and will see how it turns out.
