Although they are fairly sturdy, it would not be safe to yank or pull on them too hard. Our fan's original pull chain gave up the ghost after 15 years of use. Having a working pull chain was exactly what was needed to get the fan back in operation. It is no longer possible to purchase the original fan hardware. That's not unexpected. As of now, the new hardware seems to be holding up well. I had no problems with the fan. It was less expensive than replacing the entire unit.
