These are meant to be used in the automotive and industrial industries. They would only be waterproof if a sealer, such as silicone, was used and the silicone was used to seal it.
If necessary, the grommets could be cut, but they are fairly hard and not the soft rubber grommets that I had hoped for. They may be a little difficult to work with afterward due to their toughness, but they will get the job done.
I've never needed to drill these out, but in the past, I've found that when you drill out the hole to make it slightly larger, the drill catches the rubber and tares it up. If you have a Dremel, you might be able to use a round sander tool to ream out the hole, but drilling it is out.

We'll see how long it lasts, but it was just what I needed to plug the wiring hole on the tailgate of my '98 Jeep TJ Wrangler after I removed the spare tire mount and third brake light. If anyone was curious, I'm 5'1" tall. I required a solid plug with no through-holes. I wanted something made of soft rubber rather than hard plastic to fill the hole. It covers the sheetmetal in my tailgate well, but I don't think it would work for something thick. I knew, however, that a plug the size of a firewall would be ideal.
The delivery was quick and on schedule, which was fantastic. A similar kit I ordered around the same time is still floating around in China, indicating that it was not only made in China but also shipped from there. So there you have it. It's impossible to say when it'll arrive. That hasn't arrived yet. So, if you need something right away, not in four weeks, this is the one to order. It's excellent in every way.
I bought this because I needed half a dozen grommets for passing wires through metal holes I drilled for an automotive project, and buying six grommets at the auto parts store was almost the same price as buying this entire box. This should keep me out of trouble for the next 15 years at the very least. This kit includes a wide range of sizes as well as a convenient carrying case. If the need arises, I will purchase again.
I bought it to protect a battery wire that runs through a fiberglass boat wall, into the aft lazarette, and out to the engine well from chaff and wear. The grommits never stay in place because the fiberglass wall was too thick for them to fit through. Oh well. To protect the wire, I'll have to wrap it in a thick layer of duct tape and bike innertube rubber.
This is a fantastic product with excellent value for money, in my opinion. The rubber grommets are of excellent quality, are simple to install, and stay put! Our requirements (a high school robotics team) were met perfectly. Our students were lining the through-hole grommets prior to the arrival of this grommet kit. USE ELECTRIC TAPE OR NOTHING to make holes for electrical wiring. We're teaching these kids how to properly prepare wire runs with the right size grommets; yes, even a tiny rubber grommet can be a learning tool for future craftsmen. br>br>Our local hardware stores don't carry assortment kits like this, and the majority of our requirements are for larger (3/4 inch and 1 inch) holes for our robotics cable bundles. br>br>For wall thicknesses ranging from 1/32 inch to 1/4 inch thick, the grommets work perfectly and hold firmly in place. Very useful for wire/cable runs through metal or plastic openings in automotive and other projects. The box comes in a variety of sizes, some of which have no openings, which can be used to seal a hole that is no longer in use or to create your own size center hole if necessary. Some grommets are better suited to thin (I. e. Some are made for thinner materials, such as plastic trim, while others are made for thicker materials, such as auto) metal. Wire/cable will not rub against metal or plastic if grommets are used. I used it to run a backup camera video cable and wiring through a hole in my car's trunk lid.
Rubber grommets are a must-have! This set of grommets includes both the open style, which aids in strain relief and protection, as well as the feet style (no hole), which protects the surfaces your project sits on, aids in avoiding slippage, and allows for some air flow for cooling (assuming you've made that allowance in the bottom of your project). The size options are both common and practical. The packaging is excellent, with the exception that they do not recommend drilling holes or provide interior dimensions.
This is a fantastic set to have on hand. I don't think I'll ever use them all, but the variety of sizes and high-quality rubber is very useful. There's nothing better than having the right size and being able to properly install it into the right sized hole - It's the ideal set-up for threading wires or hoses through panel holes. I'd buy it again, and I'd tell others about it.
