It doesn't make any sense to me not to. It has been my purpose to use them that way.
In the case of particularly thick walls you would just remove the two screws holding the tabs to the bracket and replace them

Using these to install Cat5E and antenna drops in several rooms was no problem at all. Please make sure your holes are cut large enough on top and bottom, or your faceplate will bow when it is installed. The mounting bracket warps as a result of the hole in the wall being too small. It was very difficult for me to discover this at first. Let me give you a hint so you can learn from my mistake. It would be a good idea to Both the price and the quality of the product were good to me.
I found these to work well, except for the fact that there is no threading on the holes for attachment of a faceplate. Round holes are all they are. According to the description, nothing about that is mentioned. In spite of my best efforts, there was a possibility that the screws would crack the plastic as I tightened them. Maybe someone else will have an answer to this question.
They were purchased to be used with Keystone wall plates to enable me to run Ethernet I enjoyed working with them. The wall hole was cut, the plastic flaps were fastened down, and the door was firmly in place. Cables were easily run through the holes and wall plates were attached. This is as if it was created just for this place.
I have used about 10 of them. By cutting a template from cardboard, marking and cutting the drywall, and inserting the bracket, I was able to measure the opening. Wings on the bracket tighten down on the drywall as you turn the screw. In the end, an effective mounting is achieved. There is a perfect match between the hole of the bracket and the hole in the wall plate. This is a very useful thing to have.
You can get them for a bit less but if you use them often or want easy ones, you should pay a bit more and get some of better quality.
You should use these if you have low voltage components to add, like a network, cable, speakers, etc. They are easy to install in sheetrock and accept single gang faceplates.
Screwing them in first makes it easier to install, but pre-screwing and refitting them before installation makes it more convenient. This will hold for a long time.
This means these are good value for the price, however, they are quite flimsy compared with other LV gangs, so they can easily get.
