Although I'm not sure what you mean when you say you would remove the screen from the flange, if that's what you mean, it'd be possible, but bugs could get onto your roof. In regards to installing without the actual flange, you could do so by prefixing You can drill holes in the frame, then screw the face into the wall board behind, or you can caulk the face to the opening without drilling it. If you want to keep insects and dirt out, you should still use the screened flange.

My favorite part about this 22 inch octagonal vent is that it is 22 inches high. There is an extremely large vent area, which is designed more as a circle rather than a rectangle. There is a lot of weight to the plastic. My heart beats fast when I read it. Since I need two, and Amazon does not have any more, I have reached out to the company to see if I could get another unit. It may be necessary for me to return it because of that. It's a good thing they restock the product.
For an outdoor project, we purchased 2 of these Gable Vents. It was quick and easy to install and they look impressive. In this case, the board between the front and back cannot be any thicker than 5/8". Since the back is inside the structure, the front is on the outside, the thickness of the board between the front and back should not be any thicker than 5/8". It is also recommended to add caulk or silicone to prevent rainwater from leaking into the inside of the wood and rotting it.
As a result of having a humidity sensor, the attic temperature was consistently up to 76-78 degrees F Two of them found a humidity range of 80 percent and since I installed them on opposite sides of the house, I haven't received another high humidity alarm. Their job is being done well, and they look good.
A twist occurs between the inner and outer pieces. On a jar, screwing it on is like screwing the cap on. Because I had to drill holes and use torx screws to attach the outside piece to my barn wall, I had to use a thick wood wall. The vent works properly and is OK in other respects.
The price is great and the quality is great. Normally they ask for a hundred dollars for a vent like this, but Amazin immediately took it back for a refund since I bought the wrong size.
It is a fairly simple process to install this. However, there is one thing that irks me about it It would have been convenient if the centerline had been holed so that it would be easier to level. Besides that, it went up easily and looks great.
I messed up. Anyway, it looks good, and I will put it on when I redo the siding.
For my gable window cover, I used only the front piece and did not use the back. The design looks good and for the price, it is a great deal.
