I believe you will be alright. These are the fence posts I used to build an 8 ft tall fence on top of railroad ties (actually bridge timber). You really have to consider what you are building when you make that decision. You're okay if this is a fence with both sides supported by 2x4s or a similar material.
It's actually a bit heavy for this bracket Corran, so I'd say this would be a bit overkill- It's our job. Simpson Strong-branded merchandise can be found at Lowe's It would be better to tie item # 51759.
Using my ruler, I measured the strong tie and it was 5 1/2 inches from the base to the top.
My choice of anchor bolt is a 1/2 inch by 6 inch hot dipped galvanized

Their paint is extremely nice, and their strength is quite impressive, so I expect a prolonged life from As for the 4x4's, I used them as made to measure and they fit well. The only reason for a 4 instead of a 5 star is due to the labels on the strong ties, they are difficult to remove. As soon as I soaked them, I used a plastic scraper to get the surface label off, then tried Goo Gone but it didn't work, then a carburetor spray and paper towels completed the process. It's a minor issue, and I would buy them again without reservation, but I hope they replace the stickers with vinyl ones so they are easier to remove.

I had given up searching for a heavy duty post base and then found these on Amazon. A nice, rugged construction and a heavy enough weight for the post to stand up well. In comparison to the lightweight brackets sold at big box stores [in which I have been unable to find these], the 12 gauge steel is hands down the winner! Besides, no 4X4 is the same size as another, so if yours are a little loose, shim up with a fiberglass or composite shim and take the slack out of it! The performance of these pumps is very important to me, so I am confident that they will work well. Two times as valuable as the original.
